I agree with the comments about the new "lame" color scheme.

I was able to fix my close captioning on my TiVo. It does not have the reboot issue some are seeing

    Settings and Messages>User Preferences>Closed Captioning

If you can get the Closed Captioning Menu make the following changes:

    Background Opacity to 75%
    Container color to Black
    Container Opacity to 0%

It's ugly! No one likes change...I'm not impressed with the decision on taking the menu highlight colors away. Especially on the guide. I can see combining categories to 'streamline' the menu, but certain aspects of the TiVo product set it apart. I work for a major cable company and our DVR is the best out there and I still use TiVo! I'm starting to rethink it if they tweak too much and take away Tivos personality. Where's my TiVo guy in color?!?! If you want TiVo to become just another DVR then you're on the right path. Keep the logo grey like it has nothing to offer and us loyal users will not want to invest in new products. Just my $.02

We just got this and it looks terrible. I know it's just one more data point in the decline of TiVo, but I wish we could opt out and hang onto the old one.

Oh man that's right, i forgot about having to perform the S-P-S-P-S trick again after a power failure or mystery reboot. It eventually got harder and harder to get it to "stick" when setting it up again, sometimes took me like 10 tries.

I initially set up S-P-S-P-S to hide the annoying Ads, but the added bonus was it cleared that lingering Progress Bar quickly. I also got good at quickly hitting the CLEAR button immediately after hitting Pause.

But then i had an epiphany - program my Universal Remote to clear the Ads and Progress Bar instead. So i reprogrammed the Pause button to be a quick 2-step Macro (Pause > Clear). That instantly clears the Ads and the Progress Bar and works great! Then i realized i could also use this Macro trick for the Play and Replay keys and that works great too.

If i need to bring up the Progress bar while playing a recording (to check how many minutes in i am) i simply hold the Play button down and that keeps the Progress Bar on the screen until i let up. I later added a short delay to the Play > Clear Macro because it clears out TOO quickly (before i can see the minutes).

This might come in handy for those who use a programmable universal remote and hate that lingering progress bar.

I also have the problem with the TIVO Series 4 SW 20.7.2 rebooting after selecting Display Settings/Closed Captioning. Different colors and a grey TIVO guy are minor things, but a system crashing after navigating to a standard selection is unacceptable. Any solution to the system crashes would be appreciated.

There have been so many of these posts that the white bar is painfully bright. Does everyone have their brightness set to scorch mode as its hard for me to imagine a white bar on the TV hurting your eyes? :) What's the brightness setting on your TV?

When we were finally shopping for an HD TV back in 2009-2010, I read about box stores cranking the brightness on display models to make you feel that the picture was "better", but I would hope that wouldn't be a default.

Yep: get used to the new scheme. ;)

For whatever it's worth, I have, to the point that when I would go back to my Roamio from the Bolt, the Roamio would look a bit out-of-date. Having said that, there still are some style elements I would prefer to be changed: sometimes, I find that the ultra-flatness impedes being able to discern items; and I wish that TiVo-guy still had a face and more personality--TiVo is supposed to be fun!

The white is so bright I had to avert my eyes - and it is impossible to read what's highlighted. There has to be a way to improve this or provide options for color scheme. I've been with TIVO since it's first DVR and just turned my TIVO off I hated this so much. Shifting to using my cable dvr til they fix this.

So the Bolt has had white for a while? (Perhaps since it came out?)

Right, since the beginning I believe (it's in the 2015 user guide).

Was wondering the same. It doesn't hurt anything, it's just white. It's a jarring change, and does look more harsh, but hurt? My TV doesn't put out enough light to hurt anything.

The brightness setting on my TV is NOT set too brightly, and anyway I shouldn't have to adjust my TV's brightness setting to accommodate this so-called "update" when EVERY other display is perfect except the TiVo menu! The new white highlight color is ridiculously harsh, glaring and DOES hurt my eyes, and the red and green indicator circles are nearly as bad! Have never had any issue before (and I've been with TiVo since 2000), so I'm definitely blaming the new color. The highlight bar is now flat and cartoonish-looking, and I find it difficult to read the text under the highlight, perhaps because I'm squinting against the brightness! Certainly not a change for the better, and I can only pray TiVo will add an option to choose the old color scheme asap!

p.s. I miss the colorful TiVo icon so much...like losing a dear old friend. :(

TiVo is never going to provide such a "classic mode" option; the whole point of the 20.7.2 release is to get all current TiVos looking the same, and historically TiVo has been very parsimonious with user options. It's just not going to happen.

Assuming your difficulty is not psychosomatic, if you can't read the select line and the TiVo screen is truly hurting your eyes, then your TV is in scorch mode. (My TV is properly adjusted, and since 20.7.2 the select line is perfectly readable and has a comfortable brightness.) I imagine that the reason your TV is in scorch mode is because, like many TVs, it was never properly adjusted from the in-store display defaults, defaults which are purposefully set very bright in order to stand out on the sales floor. You can either adjust your TV properly, wear sunglasses, or give up TiVo. (Or try the arbitration route for relief; good luck with that!)

Personally I somewhat preferred the old color scheme, but I'd much rather everyone's attention be focused on the Guide inaccuracies, sound synch issues, and HDCP problems than be distracted by this trivial and easily remedied issue.

Anything can happen, but given that TiVo presumably is attempting to standardize matters, I'm guessing unlikely (unless TiVo were to go the route of its subtitles, with many options--but I'm guessing, unlikely . . .).

Well, after getting over the initial shock of the new color and GUI look of the TiVo menus, (see my original post above), I am now getting used to it. I guess it is ok and I am even starting to like it a little. It does appear to be more clean and modern. Like anything else, change is hard to accept at times and after having been using the old menus for so long, it just seemed like such a harsh change. At any rate, now both of my TiVo units and now my TiVo Mini all have the "new look". I guess this is progress.

I have been a TiVo subscriber since the 2nd version of the box. I absolutely hate what they did and I don't really understand what the benefit of the HD screens are. I miss the TiVo guy smiling at me. The white color is too bright. I almost bought the Bolt when they had the last promotion, but $800 with lifetime (now called something else) was too much money for me when I already had 2 working TiVo's and a mini. I have been using the interface for so long that using my cable company's DVRs was so "foreign" to me that I couldn't stand it. The guide data has been lackluster since Rovi took over. SkipMode is the only thing that keeps me as a customer.

I do not like the trend of UI's these days. We need a change back to the skeuomorphic days on all our devices. This change to "bold typography" and "high contrast colors" is a bad one because I do not find electronics beautiful anymore. And whoever put the hump in the bolt needs to be fired. I want my components to be rectangular and flat with plenty of indicator lights and displays on the front and buttons too. not simplistic and styish. save the fung schway for the furniture, not my TV components.

Did no one think to test this new interface under low light conditions?

The Brightness setting on a TV actually adjusts the Black Level, not the screen's brightness. Screen brightness is controlled by the Contrast or Picture setting, as well as the Backlight setting if present.

The new white highlight bar looks just fine on my fairly well calibrated Sony LCD TV, Panasonic Plasma, and even on my little 24" Insignia LCD TV on a desk (all being fed with a 4x1 HDMI Splitter). It's not harsh at all, and the black text in the highlight bar is clear and very easy to read. And i have my TVs adjusted on the bright side.

If you're really having that much trouble viewing the menus then your TV settings are probably not optimized. I'd start by pausing your Tivo on local or network news where the anchorman is wearing a black suit, then lower your Brightness setting until you can no longer see details such as button holes or pin stripes in his black suit, then bump it up a few notches until they reappear. Then move to the Contrast setting and adjust it till the anchorman's face looks normal. Fine tune both settings as needed. When i was doing flat panel installs in previous years, i found most people had their TVs set all wrong and i was able to improve them immensely within a few minutes. And further adjusting in the advanced menus made them even more accurate.
