My TiVo XL4 is getting up in age, and I'm worried about the hard drive pooping out, so I want to back it up. I only have 4 TB drives around here. Can I use one of those in the TiVO, or is it limited to 2 TB, which is what's in there now?

Been a long time since I worked on these things, so any advice is appreciated.

It depends on what models those drives are. Basically, if they are the WD Red (not Pro), then they can be used in a Tivo. Any other models would use too much power, produce more heat, spin too fast, etc.

Its possible to use up to 8 TB with MFSTools 3.2.

    Thank you!

They are Seagates (ST4000DM000). Do you think this drive will be okay? It's pretty quiet and relatively low heat.

If so, I'm going to give this a shot.

I think the ST4000DM000 drives are old enough to be PMR (good), not SMR (bad).
