According to this article Detective Joe Mannix shot 17 times and knocked unconscious 55 times in the eight year run of the series. My man was shot twice a year and knocked out twice a month for eight years! That's some serious punishment. I remember watching this show as a kid and for some reason it popped into my head this morning. Maybe I'll pick up a season's dvd collection this week.

    This sentence cracked me up:
Who were some other legendary tough, non-superpowered tv private eyes?

The only thing that got shot more than Mannix was his car. That 'Cuda must have been 75% bondo by the end of the series.

When Joe Mannix showed up as a friend of Dr. Mark Sloan's (Dick Van Dyke) on Diagnosis Murder "Hard Boiled Murder" 1973), I expected to find out that he was being treated for brain damage for getting sapped all the time. They gave him a heart condition instead.

It was a really interesting show, because it was a sequel of a Mannix episode ("Little Girl Lost" 1973) and used it as flash-backs. They even got Parnell Roberts, Julie Adams & Beverly Garland, to reprise their roles in the original episode.

When I was a kid I loved to watch Cannon, mostly because I was really into cars and the Lincoln Mark III/IV was my 2nd favorite to the 60's Chrysler Imperials (the ones with the "birdie on the back" as I used to say) :)

Well, Cannon wouldn't fit in a 'Cuda.

Let's not forget Jim Rockford in his Firebird and the famous J-turn.

I blame trying that maneuver for 3 wrecked transmissions in my cars.

I wonder why Mannix isn't rerun anywhere. Or at least not that I've seen.

All the classics were mentioned.. Rockford Files, Cannon and Barnaby Jones.. cant forget Hawaii Five O either. Apparently in his later years Jack Lord actually thought he was McGarrett.

Cuda? His car was a custom Olds Toronado with the roof removed and the back seats covered by a tonneau cover which held the Mobile Telephone.

FWIW, he broke several bones during the show.

The Toronado was his first car but it only lasted the one season. He then went to Chrysler products, initially with a Dart, but then they went to the 'Cuda which lasted 2 or 3 seasons. I believe he went to a Camaro in the final season.

Not a single mention of Dan Tanna from Vegas and his red T-Bird convertable? :)

He had a car phone as well!

Do Crockett and Tubbs not count because they are Police officers? Because let's face it the Ferrari (both the Daytona replicar and the Testarossa) are way up on the cool-o-meter. Combine that with the slick Art Deco Miami backgrounds and it was a visual treat.

There are probably others but Psych is the only current private eye show that I can think of and they certainly don't have a cool car or shoot people.

I thought it would be for brain damage too! He always seemed to get hit on the back of the head just before the half-hour commercial break.
