The pod people have taken over David Milch's brain once again. There's no way this is the same writer who gave us Deadwood. It's even worse than John From Cincinnati and that's saying something. A total mess. No character worth identifying with. The dialogue was muddled and often made little sense. I couldn't begin to understand if there was a story arc. I will admit the photography was good but that's about it.

I gave Milch a pass on JFC, since he deserved it from Deadwood. It was bad but it had moments and a few of the characters were interesting. I can't do that for Luck, even by pilot standards. It was a disaster. With Boardwalk Empire done, I don't have to worry about renewing my HBO subscription.

Muddled dialogue is Milch's forte. I hate it. It was ok with NYPD and Deadwood because the cast and plots on those shows were very good. Luck was horrible, hopefully it gets better.

So sad to hear this. Deadwood is one of my top shows of all time. I would have considered getting HBO for this (I dumped HBO in disgust after Deadwood).

I'll probably try to catch this somehow once it has aired. Probably on DVD just to give it a chance.

He does NOT get a pass from me. Deadwood got cancelled because Milch wanted to make JFC so badly. JFC killed Deadwood.

Sepinwall is just one person, no different than us. I never give much thought to what "critics" say, good or bad.

I liked it. I'll admit to being a semi-serious horse player, so I was aware of a lot of what was going on (and if you weren't there are some things that were probably hard to understand, I'll be happy to answer any questions you all have). I'm psyched for the other 8 episodes.

It was good - but I do know horse betting.

I was more shocked by the horse breaking down than I've been with a human getting shot.

I did smell John from Cincinnati with the way too-many characters, but I think it'll play out.

They could have built some tension on the group of broken-down horse players NOT winning right away but I guess he's gonna go into how they handle losing the massive winnings.

It looks to me like Ace is cut from the same cloth as "Ace" in Casino.

Despite a phenomenal cast, my wife & I found it very disappointing. No intention of watching future episodes.

What a boring, uninteresting, lackluster show. If it hasn't been proven that a star doesn't make a hit, this show's gonna be held up in all its glory to make that statement over and over again.

    HBO's losing their touch.

I watched it last week, and I felt like a moron.

I didn't understand hardly any part of what any character was talking about, at any time during the show. I've never been to a horse race and know zero about it, especially the betting terms.

Just not for me I guess.

Is there a special term for the people who ride horses for trainers (during training, not races)? Is the word "jockey" reserved for those who ride in races?

I just watched the first episode and while it was a struggle at first I think it really started getting good in the last half. Also the racing / training scenes were amazing. I have been a life long horse racing enthusiast. Going to try and watch the next couple episodes now.

I watched the pilot. Had no idea what was going on and didn't care. Season pass deleted.

You should go into an HBO show with the expectation that it's going to take a few episodes to develop. There's no point in watching if you're going to make your decision after just one episode.

Having said that, I've watched every episode thus far, and I'm still undecided. I think it's going to land somewhere well above John from Cincinnati, but below Deadwood.

I have watched the first three so far and really enjoy it.

That being said I can see how someone who is not into horse racing might find it off putting. I am assuming it will become more relatable as the show progresses.

I think part of the show is showing that the multiple worlds surrounding horse racing are very foreign from the ones we know. Traditionally TVs and movies might bridge such a gap by making them relatable to our own worlds.

Here it seems we are expected to adapt and learn their world. Also with so many characters it is not even clear what everyone's role is in all of this. Finally we have this different stories that right now are held together by the thinnest thread but will certainly collide at some point.

With all that going on on top of all the horse racing stuff, if i was not fairly familiar with racing I might find trouble with it.
