Okay, three basic questions about Tivo's lifetime service:
    • I have a Series 1 and two HR10-250 units with Lifetime Service. If I sell them, will the Lifetime Service transfer to the new owner?

    • I read here about grandfathering of Lifetime Service for units purchased prior to 2000. My Series 1 may be in that category. What does grandfathering provide, and how can you tell when Lifetime Service began?

    • I have a Multi-Service discount on my new Tivo HDs. If I disconnect the Series 1 will I lose this discount?

    Thanks.

Your HR10-250 DirecTV TiVos do not have lifetime subscriptions, your D*TV account has a lifetime subscription.

When your Tivo was purchased isn't relevant. What is relevant is when the lifetime subscription was purchased. A lifetime subscription purchased before 1/21/00 is eligible to be transfered once to another Tivo. To check for eligibility, you can either call tivo and ask them or you can go to tivo.co and log in to your account and check the billing history for that tivo.

The S1 only has to make a connection once every 180 days to keep the MSD unit at the MSD price.

Thanks, Mick. Turns out my Series 1 lifetime service was purchased in 1999. If I were to sell it, would the buyer be able to transfer the lifetime service to another Tivo? It's probably moot anyway, since it sounds like I'll have to keep the Series 1 on hand to keep multi-service discounts.

Also, can you explain how the lifetime service on the HR10-250s relates to my DirecTV account. I paid the $199 to Tivo and haven't been paying any Tivo charges on those machines. But, I've been paying a monthly DirecTV DVR DVR service fee ($5.99).

    Yes.
DirecTV is overcharging you. The whole point of the $199 fee was to avoid the monthly $5.99 fee.

Wow. Thanks, guys. I just called and wrote DirecTV requesting a refund for the $5.99/month going back several years.

The weird thing is that Tivo shows me buying the Lifetime Service back in 2001, but I don't think I had these receivers until 2004. I must have done a transfer at some point.

Man it's hard to keep up with this stuff. Glad to have this resource.

It's not weird at all. You didn't have those receivers back in '01 because they didn't exist yet. You had some other receiver(s) when you paid for a lifetime sub.
Like I said, it's your account that has the lifetime subscription not the individual receivers. It doesn't matter what receivers you have. As long as you have a D*TV account you will have a lifetime sub on any D*Tivos that you have.

You would have had to purchase a S1 DTiVo (Philips DSR6000, Sony SAT T-60) and pay TiVo for lifetime to have lifetime on your DirectTV account. When DirecTV took over they just moved the lifetime from the S1 DTiVo to your DirecTV account. It is good for all DTiVos on that account, and maybe other DVRs too.

The lifetime on your Philips HDR112 or HDR312 is what can be transfered around once for free to another unit.

Did I read that correctly? I have a 212 and am going to get a S3. can that be transferred once for free? I was gong to wait for the inevitable offer to transfer for 199 (which I got an email about today), but free is better.... :D
