:) @Steveknj, welcome to the network that brought you the Arrowverse. Agreed, the phrase "kung Fu" means mastery through hard work, and that's not the emphasis here in the CW-verse, where the core demographic's young female heroes are perpetually finding themselves and who they're supposed to be. But I'm still in for now, chuckling at the cheesiness, enjoying the simplistic subcultural references, and critiquing the TV-quality stunts.

Agreed! To me this is the Asian version of Supergirl (which I gave up on as well).

From the Netflix series Marco Polo:

I call it "mastery through hard work".

I'll watch the next episode but I'm not sure after that. I'm not a legal expert but I think she committed multiple felonies in the second episode.

I will try to complete my 3-episode trial rule, but I am thinking this will not make the cut.

What? Walking into a poker game and taking the money after beating up the bouncers is not TOTALLY legal? Who knew?

One thing that amused me is that earlier, somebody complained about how in the original series Caine kept drawing on his lessons from Kung Fu Academy in his present life, and in the pilot there was no hint of that. Well, this episode seems to indicate that they're very much going to be doing exactly that.

And it doesn't help. Because they're not doing it at all well.

It was almost painful how the conflicts are structured, and how easily they were overcome. I want to compare it to After-School Specials, but that wouldn't be at all fair to After-School Specials, which were very formulaic and simplistic, but at least competently done.

It really is terrible, isn't it? Even the brief bits of Mandarin dialog are painfully bad.

I winced at Olivia Liang's inconsistent usage and pronunciation for the Mandarin of "Father".
She pronounced it three different ways.
(And I don't even speak fluent Mandarin so that ought to tell you something.)

Unfortunately, I don't have much else to say about the show other than it's still pretty much what I expected.

Agreed. I caught up on Warrior and love it. I wanted to like Kung Fu though.

I'm out. This isn't even Kung Fu. It's just a CW drama, titled Kung Fu. While they did a good job of getting us boomers to watch, by drawing us in by using the same title, it's clearly written for the typical CW audience. Overwrought drama, intra-family feuds, close-ups that almost lead to a kiss before being interrupted at the last second by another love interest, super-hip club scenes, yada yada. Heck, last night hardly had any Kung Fu, maybe 10 seconds while she handily disposed of Mr. Big Brutus, after busting her way thru a paper-thin door.

I really really wanted to like this. I loved KF, and would have stuck around if they had even tossed me a bone. But this is just salad. An Arugula one, just to be hurtful .

Last surviving member of original 'Kung Fu' has one complaint about the CW reboot
The last surviving member of the original Kung Fu series that starred David Carradine as a wandering, mixed-race monk trained in the martial arts said he takes issue with the CW's update and how it uses the same title — especially when the two shows couldn't be more different.

Have not watched the latest, but I suspect my response would/will be EXACTLY what you said.

After the first episode I figured it was going to be exactly what you described. Now that you've confirmed, I won't bother with the second.

Haven't watched it yet, but that was exactly my thought when I looked at the episode summary...

Glad I did not let the name of the show convince me to try it. Thanks everyone for suffering for me.

I was hoping for another Yu Shu Lien type character (Yeoh is my girl) with a throwback to the original Kung Fu which I never cared much about back in the day.

The family dramas don’t bother me but I’m getting too little kick-azz to keep me happy.
