I think they have a mutual respect for each other. I also believe that you can't love/like someone without also being able to hate them. You have to care about them to experience either emotion.

Didn't he also have to grab the gun and shoot with his left hand? Or am I misremembering that?

I thought the episode was great - several LOL moments, including Art telling Raylan all that body fat saved him, Raylan's joke about the Mexicans, Art being chagrined at Raylan trying to steal his job, etc.

I felt so bad for the pizza boy. :(

I thought at the end that Raylan would shove the table at the assassin, but moving the table cloth was genius.

Boyd and Raylan were childhood friends, right? I always got the feeling watching them that there was some residual respect from that.

I felt bad for the pizza delivery guy too.

I forgot to reply to this earlier.

I don't think they like or hate either other. I think that Boyd respects Raylan's capabilities and street smartness and has some honor for their experiences they went through in the mines together.

I think that Raylan sees in Boyd what he could have become if he had chosen to follow in his father's path rather than blaze his own. And in that sense, he has a soft spot for Boyd in the sense of "there but for the grace of god go I." He seems himself in Boyd and as such gives him a bit of grudging respect.

They also see each other as occasional useful allies - the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

The dichotomy came to a head in this episode with the discussion of Dickey. Boyd expected that Raylan would honor some kind of Harlan code and didn't understand why that was a problem. Raylan couldn't believe that Boyd would expect him to still act like he was in the holler when he is a US Marshall. They sometimes forget who the other person really is.

I knew Raylan was going to get the hitman but I didn't see the table cloth move at all.

Why do people keep messing with Raylan especially when they already know who he is?

The joke about the newborn poking his daddy in the forehead was funny.

The conversation at the beginning between Boyd and Raylan was just such a joy to watch. Brilliant writing, and there is a real magic between the Olyphant and Goggins.. Paraphrasing Boyd, "You make that sound like I only have one suit". And so on. Just awesome.

It certainly is a complicated relationship -- I had seen it as sort of the opposite from your view.
I thought that Raylan put up with Boyd only because they had grown up together and at the same time held a strong disdain for him for what Boyd had become -- a criminal.
And Boyd does seem to like Raylan but is wary of him because of the way Raylan acts towards Boyd and to a lesser extent because Raylan is a lawman.

Don't watch it until you watch all the previous episodes otherwise you'll be frustrated...

In this case the funny was Raylan hit the guy the on the same way off place as he hit the shooting targets.

Killing the pizza delivery guy was all kinds of wrong. Even wronger was killing the hot secretary.

Absolutely loved Raylan pulling the table cloth. He was just so matter of fact about it. :)

I was just able to watch this today. Great episode, loved every bit of it. Don't think anyone mentioned:

Winona: You ready to get back in action?
Raylan: Art said another week of light duty...
Winona: That's not what I'm talking about.

I also was thinking during the countdown, he could maybe tilt the table somehow, naw, shove the table into him, naw. Was happily surprised by the calm and cool tablecloth tug. Literally watched that scene 10 times.

Also liked McDonough, there has been some excellent villains on Justified.

For those of you who love this show and have yet to find cause enough to watch Firefly. There is quite a bit of Raylan in Nathan Fillion's character on Firefly. There's also some great villains in that show.

    Slight Firefly spoiler:

and Adam Baldwin's character on Firefly at times is a nice foil to Fillion in a far less poetic, but still entertaining way that Boyd is to Raylan.
