Is there some reason Tivo Desktop takes 5+ minutes to start?

At least that long. Literally. No exaggeration. It's amazing how slow it is to start up. What's up with that? Any way to speed it up?

More like 5 seconds for me (2.6.2). What else do you have running on your PC?

Not much... and it's not CPU bound, memory bound, or disc I/O bound.

I'm running 2.7, but it's always been slow like this. I have 6 Tivo's in this house, all with expanded hard drives (so 300+ shows each).

I've seen this as well with 2.7 and older versions running on Vista (although not as bad as 5 minutes). Seems to hang on getting to the point where it would prompt for allowing TivoAutoupdate to run. After the first time where you accept allowing it to run, it starts normally without the delay.

I have Tivo Desktop 2.7 running on an AMD Athlon 64 2.01GHz system with 1 GB ram and Windows XP Home edition.

Desktop starts in less than a minute.

I believe it depends on how much you're sharing -- it scans all the files at startup.

At top of TiVo Desktop Application
    Goto:
    File
    Preferences
    Restart or Reset (Tab)
    Clear Cache Information
    Apply and Restart
    Click OK
TiVo Desktop rebuild the show title list and will start up Quickly

(Note: the cache simply grows over time. I am amazed that this application does not do this automatically. Bad TiVo, Bad Dog..!)

Welcome! Where have you been? You registered 20 months ago. :p
If you haven't already, check out kmttg or PyTiVo. :)

Yep, and with 2000 files, if it were able to see the directory with my videos, it would take forever. It already does. Note in addition to scanning the publishable videos at start up, it also reads the NPL from every TiVo when you select it and then pulls the metafile for every video. Even worse, when one switches to another TiVo, it dumps the info from the first TiVo.

AgMagFab, do yourself a favor. Dump TDT. For go-back utilities, use pyTivo. For TTG utilities, use either kmttg or Galleon.
