I am still on Series 1 TiVos so please forgive me.

I am looking at a Sony SVR-2000 and I wondered if it is as reliable and easy to work on (replacing hard drives, replacing modem if it goes out) as the two Philips ones I have had (HDR112 and 312). Thanks in advance for any educated opinions you may provide me.

Yes... From a hardware perspective, the SVR-2000 and the Philips HDR units are EXACTLY the same (other than having a different remote, and a different case/bezel), so there should be no difference in reliability or servicability, at all.

No difference if you work on them yourself. If you need to send one in for replacement then Philips is much cheaper and you get a factory refurb in exchange. Sony only repairs units at an outrageous cost.

Thanks guys, you have greatly helped me decide. Yes I work on mine myself so I think I may go for this Sony one. Thanks again

I think the Sony design is a bit slicker, although I put my Philips front and lid on my Sony, as it looked better in my HT (black almost everything).

I put the Sony front and cover on my Philips... mostly silver components in my system. :)
