I have a Directivo with a bad hard drive. I have several used 40 GB hard drives at my office that I can use to replace it. Do I need to format these drives before I can InstantCake them or will it automatically overwrite the info on them? I've never used InstantCake but plan to buy a copy of it to see if this will restore the functionality of the Directivo.

No formatting is necessary. Just plug it in and boot the IC cd. Answer a few questions and it'll start baking.

Be sure to do a C&DE on the tivo after installing the newly formatted drive.

C&DE is no longer needed on current versions of InstantCake.
