Well - it's inevitible that I will most likely be upgrading (if that's what you can call it) to the HR-20. I will be keeping the HDVR2 I have as a second reciever.

I was wondering if there are any other forums around that discuss any hacks or upgrades that can be acheived on the HR20.

I am very surprised that Weaknees does not offer any hard drive upgrades for the HR20, is there any one that offers it, or is it just a simple hard drive swap?

    Thanks

This is a tivo forum. The HR20 is discussed here

You can just plug an external drive into that unit.

DBS talk is a good place to discuss the HR20. www.dbstalk.com

Not much of a market for weakness in drive expansion because all you need to do is plug in a new drive and the unit does everything else.

The reason that Weaknees does offer a Hard Drive upgrade for the HR20 is that it is too easy and too cheap to not do it yourself. Just plug in an eSATA drive like the Seagate FreeAgent 750 for around $200 for about 3 times the storage. There are a bunch of eSATA threads in this forum on DBSTalk.

As you suggest, many of us kept our TiVo's and added the HR20 just as you are suggesting.

Check out this thread: HR10-250 and MPEG4; Upgrade Offer

As to the HR20, many have used this to get a great deal:

Add a new receiver for $19

You could keep your TiVo. You would also have the HR20 for OTA, SD, old HD, and all the new HD. You can also get up to $120 or more in programming credits.

If you were going to stay with DIRECTV anyway, Those credits might covers the cost of the $4.99 mirror/lease fee for 24 months as well.

With two receivers you could record 4 games or programs at once. If your TV is capable, you now have PIP DLB! Watch two games at once!

Here is the link to the HR20 Tips & Tricks and HR20 FAQ on dbstalk.

    Take care,

    - Craig

    Somewhere...
Hmm, I thought Weaknees had upgrades for the HR20, but now I see they only offer new units with internal hard drive upgrades (up to a terabyte):
    http://www.weaknees.com/directv-hd-dvr.php

Weaknees doesn't mention the ability to add an external SATA drive! How big can those get, I wonder?

I just upgraded my two SD HDVR2 (DirecTiVos) to 300 hours each, cause I haven't talked my wife into making the HD jump yet.
