Check this picture out. You can see all sorts of weird, garbled, images on my channel guide. Anyone know what causes this, or how to fix it ?

I'm using the HR20-700, just installed.

I also seem to have a lot of HD channels that are displayed with black bars on the sides. Can someone explain this to me ? I have the tv set to 720p, 16:9.... are some channels just not going to display properly ? maybe a mod can change the title to HR20-700 newbie concerns lol

Do you have the HR20 set to Native for the format?

This forum is for "DirecTV HDTV TiVo Powered PVRs". The HR20 is not TiVo powered but uses DirecTVs own software. Please talk about the HR20 at www.dbstalk.com

yes... it is now. What would that have corrected ? That didn't appear to solve either of the two issues I posted about.

ooops... sorry bout that. My HR10 just recently went night night... I was just used to coming here to view stuff lol. My bad...

    Campbell,...
Read the sticky at the top of the forum.

HR20 talk is encouraged here now.

To the original poster, I'd try rebooting the HR20. If that doesn't fix it, then something in it is either broke or corrupt.

Not all digital TV content is HD, even on an HD channel. Many sources of HD will pillar-box (the black bars) a SD 4x3 program and transmit it that way in 16x9 format.

I think you need to keep yourself more up to date with the times.

although true, the discussion here is more geared to comparisons and such. for more technical information, id go to dbs. youre more likely to get a faster, accurate response to your question since discussion there is primarily dtv/dvr based.

and youre also more likely to find the answer to your problem with a quick search.

thanks for the replies. I did search here, but wasn't aware of dbstalk... I do have an open thread there now, and someone is actively helping me. I appreciate the quick responses thus far. I did do a reset, but that didn't help either.

Also, thanks for the explanation about the pillar, etc. I never experienced that with the few HD channels I had with the HR10.

Then this forum is incorrectly named. If it is intended to have a HR20 forum they should make a "DirecTV HDTV non-TiVo Powered PVR" section. Why confuse everyone when trying to support the HR10-250?

The name doesn't change the guidelines for the forum. This has been debated a lot over the last few days.

Nowhere does it say that it is "encouraged". It is permitted. That doesn't change the fact that people interested in discussing non-TiVo DTV DVRs would be better served by going to dbstalk.

While I appreciate all the discussion on whether the post was to be served here or not, I ended up not resolving the problem, and a new receiver is on the way. thanks for all the help.
