The hard drive on my HR10-250 died and DTV sent me a HR20-700 as a replacement. I've read the various comparisons between the two units and the biggest difference for me is the lack of dual buffering on the HR20-700. Also, is there a way to use Instant Cake on a laptop? I do not have access to a desktop.

The drive you need to Instantcake has to be connected to the computer. If your laptop can connect to a regular hard drive, then you probably can.

    No desktop?

I think you're really restricted here.

I keep an old DELL 350 or 400 as my "Tivo Upgrade Computer".

You don't need a fancy desktop, just something basic.

But You need ~real IDE interface , I don't think an usb drive will work.

    ...............

I'd try to keep the HR10-250 going, if you can get OTA locals for the time being.
    Just my opinion.

I got a couple of fairly new 250 gig Drives here, coming out of Stock-units.
I can sell them to you cheap if you want.
    (also got 500 gigs ready)

All you have to do is drop the Drive in, do a "clear and Delete", reboot and you are ready to go.

I could also take the old TiVo off your hands, if you like.
    :D
    PM me if interested.
