I have gotten newer Tivos and moved my Roamio unit to the basement. It is behind a wall. The Tivo remote is paired to the Tivo, so when I'm in the room with the Roamio I can change channels and use the Guide, etc. But when I got into the other room where the Tv is, the remote doesn't control the Roamio. The input button on the remote does work so that I an change inputs, and my Roku works behind th wall with the Roku remote.

I used to have one of the Tivo minis down in the basement, and it worked fine behind the wall, but I want the extra storage that the 3 GB Roamio gives me.

    Any suggestions?

I think the previous post was trying to say that some buttons on the TiVo remote send IR to control TV functions. Input is one of them, like mute, volume and TV Power. Sometime the IR signal can be reflected allowing it to reach past that wall.

Could be, but he says the tivo works when he's in the room with the tivo... Line of sight?
I believe the roku remote is R/F.

Thanks to all for your responses. I tried the first suggestion but it didn't work. But I then tried following that suggestion on another remote and it did work. So I'm guessing I had a problem with the original remote. All is well now

Love my Tivo (even if I don't love the pre-roll adds and never use Tivo+ - ick!). I got my first Tivo when it was an ATT- Branded series 2. Then I saw that DirecTV had Tivo units, and they had a much better clarity so I went with them and stayed with DirecTV a long time. But When DirecTV stopped updating its DirecTivo units I got myself a Tivo Series 3, and by-by DirecTV. LOVE MY TIVO. Just too bad the new company doesn't seem to care about us. But as long as the device works and the guide works, I'm ok. The Comcast unit I have to have in order to get its best package is a pale imitation.

If you don't mind using a phone or tablet in lieu of the TiVo remote, you could use the TiVo app to control the TiVo from anywhere that your WiFi can reach.

No, it is an official TiVo release. Free download. It has been available for many years for Android or iOS devices. I've used it on an old Nexus 7 tablet, and iPad and iPhone.

Dont count in it. If you want to watch your shows in the bathroom you'll be fine. In the waiting room at dmv??? Ain't gonna work.

downloaded the app, logged on to tivo.com. that went well.
but every time i try to connect to a tivo the screen displays for a few seconds then refreshes(?) and there is a message indicating connection problems. all tivos are hard wired to the wireless/router. the phone was less than 10 feet from router.
so yeah this app may not be helpful.

Well I mean connected to your router's WiFi which is unrelated to the phone setting for making WiFi calls, but I'll assume this does mean that it's connected to your router's WiFi.

Yes the phone is connected to the router's wifi.
The messages says reconnecting then having trouble contacting the tivo unit.
I will look around elsewhere; don't want to hijack the op's subject.

You need to configure the TiVo to allow network controls.

    Go to:
Setting & Messages / Remote, CableCard & Devices / Network Remote Control
    and set it to "Allowed".
