    OK... vent first!

I have created a wishlist as follows: HD/Title:NFL FOOTBALL - and put this at the top of my season pass list. The Tivo S3 HD has TWO tuners right? So this Sunday night I come home looking to get busy with some serious football action and what do I have in my Now Playing List?? ONE GAME RECORDED AT 1PM!!!!!! WHY!!?!?!?!?? I check the schedule and there was a game at 1 PM, then TWO games at 4:15 PM and another TWO games at 8 PM..... SO WHY DO I ONLY HAVE ONE GAME!?!?!?!? WHY IS TIVO RECORDING LESSER PRIORITY CRAP IF NFL FOOTBALL IS ON ANYWHERE?!? WHY HAVE TWO TUNERS AND/OR PRIORITIES AT ALL!?!?!?

Oh yeah!!... and while I'm foaming at the mouth... here's an idea for the Tivo programming geniuses out there: If "NFL FOOTBALL" is the title of the program and the program that immediately follows is also "NFL FOOTBALL" - and it's a LIVE event.... WHY WOULD YOU ADD AN HOUR AND THEN NOT RECORD THE 2ND PROGRAM!?!?!? IT'S THE SAME !%$%!$ CHANNEL!?!?!?! TACK ON AN HOUR TO THE END OF THAT PROGRAM AND RECORD THE ENTIRE BLOCK!!!!! DUH!!??!!!!!

Oh wait!! THERE'S MORE!!! What if I ONLY want Ravens Games!? Do you think that's even possible to define in a wishlist??? HELL NO!!!!!! Instead I'm stuck defining something like "HD/Sports/Football/NFL Football" and then having to wade through the damn TODO list to tell the TiVO what I want it to record and what NOT to record!! Here's a thought! Why can't I add a keyword after I go through and categorize what I'm looking for!? This way I actually get GAMES and not a billion local 30 minute yap fests about the Ravens on every Baltimore channel known to man!!! WOW.... Just think.... I could actually do a wishlist like "HD/Sports/Football/Title:NFL Football/Keyword:Ravens" - wallah!!! All Ravens games get recorded! Imagine that!!! ARRRGH!

    So... Here's my summary:
    1) Obviously having two tuners and priorities at all is a joke and results in an irate girlfriend who is ready to check the average trajectory of a Tivo out a 2nd story window!! This has resulted in more missed recordings of games that make absolutely NO SENSE! (But hey! There's a few M*A*S*H's to watch that was on at the same time and recorded for some stupid reason since it was 3rd from the BOTTOM OF THE PRIORITY LIST!!!!!) WHY!?!?!?!?!?!

    2) Add the ability to add a keyword AND categories/subcategories to a wishlist item!!!!!

    3) Add some intelligence to the recording Todo scheduler to recognize live event, same title programs on same channel and if event matches wishlist/Season Pass, then extend recording to end of 2nd live event (plus an hour or whatever is defined for live events in the Settings)!

ok... rant over.... this Tivo is just about ready to go back into the box.... combined with Comcast's inability to have anyone with any intelligence at all on their CSR staff to make the cablecards able to pull in my premium channels... I'm just about ready to just say To Hell with comcast AND Tivo.... don't even get me started on the start time/end time of certain programs.... ug..... a 30 min program... how hard is it!?

I swear.... one more issue comes up and it's gonna be a quick RMA.... One more time both tuners can't simultaneously record priority 1 stuff.... boom! It's outta here and Tivo can kiss my sub good bye.....

Color me frustrated beyond belief!!!! GAAA!

Wow, I don't even know where to begin with all of those inaccuracies. Let's just start simple: You can easily record Ravens games through an Auto-Record Wishlist.

Create a keyword wishlist with "NFL Football" "Baltimore Ravens", with the category HD/Sports/Sports-Event.

Note: If you are using 9.1 or later, you would enter NFL Football and Baltimore Ravens as 2 different keywords without the quotes. Pre-9.1 you enter them as one line with quotes.

They already have this ability since TiVo invented wishlists.

I wish that worked flawlessly on the HD-TiVo. I do that for the Bears, and it tries to record the Sunday Ticket feed instead of the local network, which is blank since I don't subscribe. The channel pops back into my channel list every week, and I have to remember to delete that scheduled recording.

Needless to say, while I'm not enjoying the results of the games, I do have a wishlist for Denver Broncos/Football and somehow it catches those exact games...hehe...I love TiVo.

Since it's football and not baseball, isn't it easy enough to go through the guide and just select the games to record.

I know I do that, just hit record on those, real easy, takes 5 min

Isn't "Sunday Ticket" a DirecTV-only package? How are you using a TivoHD with DirecTV?

    Uh.... what? This confuses me.

    1) I set my S2 to record all "UofL/Basketball" and "UofL/Football" and it works flawlessly. It records every UofL Basketball and Football game. I also set "Bengals/Football" and "Colorado Avalanch/Hockey" and I get every avs game that airs. The only problem is, I tend to get a lot of pre-game and post-game talk shows too.

    2) Turn off tivo suggestions recording if it sometimes interferes. Though, my understanding is that it only does TiVo suggestions if it is doing nothing else.

    3) Did you check your local programming listing? Because oftentimes if a game is blacked out in your area or MIGHT be blacked out in your area it doesn't show up in the programming guide which will cause your TiVo to not see it.

    4) why would it record and extra hour? I mean, it has the option to record extra time on life programs, but only if you set it to.

Seriously, nothing you're ranting about makes any sense. The TiVo does everything you're saying it doesn't do.

edit: Oh, I do have to admit, I've never had two wishlist items running at the same time AND a lower priority item running at the same time. So i cannot speak for what will happen there. Maybe I will test this out next week and intentionally set something to record and then try to wishlist all NFL games.

Yeah, i think he misspoke. I think he means the DirectTiVo not the HD-Tivo.

I would think you could go into your DirectTiVo and tell it "i do not get these channels" the same way you can with the S3 and digital channels you don't get.

Btw, by chance to you set your wishlist to keep until you delete? That would explain a lot of your issues.

You can add a category on any other wishlist.

You did not create the appropriate wishlist. If you just create a sports/football category wishlist, you will get all sorts of pre-game and post-game talk shows rather than the games themselves.

    Here's what you do:

If you still have the older 8.x software

    1. Open Find Programs to Record -> Wishlists

    2. Choose "Create New Wishlist" -> Keyword wishlist. Type in the following keywords, using the pause button for quotes.

      "Baltimore Ravens" at

    3. Select the category sports/football.

    4. Click to save wishlist.

    5. Choose to autorecord wishlist.

    6. Open Find Programs -> Season Passes and move your wishlist up to the priority level you want. The Season pass list determines which two programs get recorded when three or more programs conflict.

If you have the new 9.x software

    1. Open Find Programs to Record -> Wishlists

    2. Click "Create New Wishlist."

    3. Select keyword. Type in the following keyword:

      Baltimore Ravens

    4. Then add a second keyword separately:

    5. Click category and select sports/football.

    6. Click to save wishlist.

    7. Choose to autorecord wishlist.

    8. Open Find Programs -> Season Passes and move your wishlist up to the priority level you want. The Season pass list determines which two programs get recorded when three or more programs conflict.
In either case, you can specify the HD/sports/football category if you want, but if you do that, the Tivo won't record the Ravens game if it is SD. Not all games are available in HD. And not all HD games are flagged as HD. I find the better choice is to remove SD channels from your Settings -> Channels -> Channel List, then just choose category sports/football. If you've removed the SD channels from your Channel List, the Tivo will always record from the HD channel.

If NFL football is a high priority for you, remember to move that up on your Season Pass list. If football is your absolute top priority, move that wishlist up to priority #1. However, be aware that Monday Night Football will interfere with several other programs on Mondays. If you would rather record Heroes on Monday nights, move that to a higher priority.

Stick an AT in there. That will eliminate the pre-game and post-game talk shows.

For example, to record Bengals football, you should have two different keywords:

    Cincinnati Bengals

For your Avalanche hockey, you should have:

    Colorado Avalanche

Remember, not all football and hockey games are broadcast in HD. And not all football and hockey that is broadcast in HD is actually flagged as HD. If you specify the HD category, the Tivo won't record SD programs. You have two options. You can create a second copy of your wishlist without the HD flag to record SD games, and put it at a lower priority (=higher number) on your season pass list; with this setup, the Tivo will not record two copies of the same game, but it will record the HD version if available and the SD otherwise. Or you can drop the HD category altogether and simply remove the SD version of the channel from Settings -> Channels -> Channel List.

Cliff Notes: I have no idea how to use Tivo, but will just try different stuff randomly and complain when it doesn't work.

I won't ask anybody to help me because a multi paragraph rant is more fun.

The other issue here is the unpredictability of sports programming. Given that, and if one is such a fanatic, why not check the weekend TV guide that is available just about anywhere online and program a manual record for 1pmET/10amPT (or whatever timezone) for 7 hours on the local CBS HD station and the same for the Fox Station for example. or whatever is needed to cover that weekend's games. I know its a bit more work, but YOU can control your TiVo to record whatever you want. Technology is indeed wonderful, but it can't be perfect for everyone. But in this case, with just a tad bit more work, you can bend technology to serve you.

My main issue is that especially for NFL the networks tend to change what game will be shown a day or two prior and Tivo does not update their guide listings to reflect the change even though Zap2it listings are updated and the local newspaper has the proper updated listing. Consequently I now just record all NFL games regardless what the guide says and then I can delete the ones I have no interest in.

I think you are better off recommending users use Sports/Sports-Event and the name of the event (ex. "NFL Football") as one of the keywords instead of using "at". You will find using the team name and "at" can pick up other shows like pre-game, weekly shows, etc.

Nah, I didn't misspeak, I just took for granted that it would be obvious which one I meant, and was just commenting that I wished that method worked for me on the HD-TiVo (I've called it that for the 3 years I've had it) that I have with DirecTv. I call my old DSR6000 the DirecTivo.

DirecTv re-adds the Sunday Ticket channels every week, so even if I mark them as not received, they get readded to my lineup when the new channel assignments are made for the next week of games.

So I understand the football frustration. More than once I've come in late to the recording, only to find it recording a black screen on a channel I don't even get.

Your problem has nothing to do with the original poster's. The OP just didn't understand how to use wishlists was their only problem.

I agree that the season passes should allow you to set the extra hour, and not have it mess things up when there are consecutive games. It seems like a pretty simple algorithm... Just add all of the shows it can (due to restrictions of higher rated shows), and then check to see if the extra time is necessary for each game (obviously not necessary if there is another game on that channel immediately after the first one).

Thanks for the info... My S3 Just updated to the newer software as of last night... wishlist building is now extremely flexible and I have defined exactly what it is I'm looking for.... #1: Title=NFL Football, keyword=Ravens; #2 Title=NFL Football, keyword=Colts, etc.... EXACTLY what I was looking to do with the old software but was unaware that you could use quotes to combine elements within the single entry box.... duly noted for my S2 Tivo....

Still doesn't explain why I had only 1 game recorded....

My apologies for the breakdown... Comcast has me insane over their complete lack of knowledge and service to getting my cablecards to work as they should...

    Thanks for the great info
