Since the Series 3 has an Ethernet port, you’re not restricted to just the TiVo Wireless N adapter as a means of making a wireless client connection. @JoeKustra has the first-hand knowledge, but I’ll point you to one of his past posts listing a number of wireless bridge alternatives:

So just so I remember....you can connect to the hotspot with something other than the Wireless N adapter, right?

If so then setup of the G adapter is easy. I already made the steps in post 5. You may not need to do a reboot after hooking up the adapter (but in my experience it seems to be a necessity for me) ;)

Edge x 4 needs the adapter due to currently using dial up. He got a freedompop hot spot just to do the guide updates.

But they don't need that *specific* adapter, since the Series 3 has an Ethernet port, right?

They could use any wireless bridge to establish the wireless client connection to the FreedomPop hot spot ... and then Ethernet-connect the wireless bridge to the Series 3 (and maybe another device or two, depending on their need and how many Ethernet ports their alternate wireless bridge has).

    Just brainstorming.

Yes, the hotspot works perfectly with my laptop. It just has a problem seeing the N adapter or vise versa. I am confident the G will connect up when I get it. Disappointing about the N though. I guess I'll sell it on ebay. Btw, the G I bought came with another fully functional S3HD and remote, so I now have a spare.

yeah youre right. Now that I think about it I've used a wifi extender on the Series 3/Tivo HD when I moved and somehow packed the G adapter in a box that took me about 2 weeks to find

    The plot thickens...
I got the G adapter today and plugged it in. My Tivo saw the FreedomPop hotspot immediately. I put in my password and thought that was it. BUT, when I tried to connect for the program guide download, I got an error n27, "network cable unplugged" message. I tried rebooting, no change. I tried another cable (it came with two), no change. I plugged the cable into the other usb input, no change. What now?

Under the Network Diagnostics: Port Configuration Test: Failed, DNS Resolution Test: Failed.
Under Network Status: Signal strength: 80-100%, DNS address 1,2,3: None, none, none.
I followed the troubleshooting directions and disconnected the G, then the power cable, reconnected the G and after a minute reconnected the power. Tried to connect, same result. It gets to "preparing" and then the warning signal and "network cable unplugged". Could this be a software problem?

I'm sorry. I have looked everywhere for my adapter. I'll need to try tomorrow. Maybe someone using that hotspot can help. It sounds like it doesn't have the right ports enabled.

Now I'm getting "gateway not found" error message. Frustrating as heck.

I wouldn't disconnect the G adapter once its hooked up. I assume on the adapter one side of it has a solid green light and the other is slowly blinking? (slowly blinking means no connection...solid means connected to internet)

It just doesnt make sense as I used a hotspot and didnt have these issues after hooking up the adapter and doing a reboot.

That's correct. Slowly blinking and blinking. Never connecting. It's like the Tivo is cursed. The hotspot is working fine on my laptop, the S3 sees it then, no gateway. I rebooted twice, no change. I', thinking of resetting the TIvo but I'm concerned that it will put me into the dreaded Guided Setup, at which point I will resort to violence. Would it do any good to reset the hotspot? Just grasping at anything now. I read somewhere on a blog that Tivo doesn't work with WPA2 security. It was a post from 2005 or so. Could that still be true? That's what the hotspot is set on.

Is that true about Tivo not supporting WPA2 security?

Thanks that's good to know. I'm thinking I should start another thread under Series 3 with the title referring to Tivo Wireless G troubleshooting. I don't think I'm reaching out all I could with a thread about wireless N. I appreciate all your efforts. Tbc...

I still don’t understand why you’re limiting yourself to only the TiVo-branded adapters.

I'm not sure where you picked up on my problem. Here's a brief recap:
I don't have cable, or a router. I watch OTA. Tivo is discontinuing dialup for program info this month, so I need another setup. I already have an N and just needed a hotspot with minimal data, and it was suggested here that I get a FreedomPop hotspot, which is free. I had trouble with the N configuration in my laptop. It seemed the opinions here were mostly that a G was the stable choice, and worked with FreedomPop hotspots. So I got those. Incidentally, I have read on this blog just about as many problems with other routers connecting too. I'd like to try a manual connection but I really don't know what the DNS address is, etc. So I'll keep pestering folks like you until it works out. I'll start a new thread with "wireless G" and FreedomPop hotspot" in the title, and try to reach out to one of the users with the same equipment.
