Because recording Suggestions will overwrite things in Recently Deleted. Suggestions will consume all free drive space, and that includes wiping out Recently Deleted. If you have few Suggestions and a relatively empty drive, things might last for a while in Recently Deleted. Eventually, on a "mature" TiVo that has had Suggestions enabled for months+, nothing will last long in Recently Deleted.

e.g., I've got two 3TB TiVos, with Suggestions on. One has 182, another has 864. The number of suggestions roughly approximates free drive space. As my 1Ps record things, Recently Deleted and then Suggestions get deleted. New Suggestion recordings will first wipe things from Recently Deleted, and if there are none, it will wipe the oldest Suggestion recorded

Essentially there is a priority list. First things perma-wiped are Recently Deleted. Then Suggestions. Then the NP list items that don't have KUID. If everything remaining is just KUID on the NPL, recordings fail.

What bottom message are you referring to?
Mine just lists the shows with the original recording date (although I am senile so perhaps I missed something on the bottom that was clearly a "message" of some sort).

BTW, TE4 on Bolt's, not sure what the XL4/TE3 shows/says.

Not sure if I'll try to "dupe" with the Bolt (white one) downstairs. The other unit (Bolt Vox) has been upgraded to the Toshiba 2 TB drive, so I doubt I'll have the issue again.

I'm still fairly certain that it's a "feature" of some version of the Tivo software, probably only really "visible" on the 500GB units where once it reaches 50% or a little over, then it starts deleting other things. Now, what the magic # is, I don't know.

I'm not really keen on finding out on the remaining Tivo (bad enough I gotta buy the missing episodes of what it DID whack now), but it is what it is.

Sorry, meant program. Recover something. Then delete it again. See where it is located.

Honestly, I seen it posted that TiVo kills the oldest programs in the deleted items folder. I've never tested that, and it will be a few months until I can.

For years now, the TiVo OS has prioritized keeping the Recently Deleted and Suggestions over unwatched recordings; the Keep Until Space is Needed setting is utter garbage and has never worked correctly at any point in time.

I recently saw a whole season of a single series get marked Deleting Soon from the first episode of the season all the way up to the most recent episode (less than 2 weeks old), meanwhile there are over 100+ episodes in the Recently deleted option taking up space (and they do, when you delete them they reduce the space used %) with some dating back to this time in 2018.

The reverse also happens with the KUSIN setting not deleting the oldest episodes in the series more than half the time when the series reaches its max number of episodes, instead it just doesn't let you record the new episodes until you manually delete the old episodes beneath the number set for it in One Pass.

These issues have been reported multiple times over the years, but TiVo does nothing about it. They just reinvent the UI's layout again, instead of making the actually application more functional, user friendly, and less buggy. I mean how many years have people been asking for them to fix it so that when you finish watching an episode that it should remove the new tag from it, or ways to flag episodes as no longer being new.

So were they actually deleted? Experience shows they just get flagged but not deleted, I have items listed as "going away soon" for years.

Exactly the way that TiVo's have always worked since our S1's and through our S3's. It flagged shows that could be deleted if space were needed (despite the warning). Made sense to me. :) It's only been since our Roamio Pro that I've not seen this same behavior. I seem to recall that Joe may have documented what might cause it to flag a show this way now but can't recall the details.

If you set the 1P to Keep at Most: All Shows, there will never be a program with a yellow dot again.

If you have two TiVo units, and transfer a program to a different box, it will be set to KUID on the destination after a few days.

If you want to see yellow dots, load pyTiVo Desktop or kmttg. Then view a TiVo's My Shows.

That's what I was thinking of and all my 1P are set that way.

There's a way to view the actual date a program will be deleted. It's More Options/Keep Until. Check an old program today. Check it tomorrow. It will move by one day. Forever.

Yes, I have had some actually deleted, and this has happened without the storage even being physically full. The random series it picks will be flagged to be deleted, with each of the items being changed from KUSIN to Delete on this specific date; with the time ranging from 24 hours to 3 days. Additionally, NOTHING even should be being flagged as "going away soon" unless the recently deleted folder is completely empty; after all the space is not needed, because there are things which were deleted (years worth) that should be deleted first.

A week maybe two is the most any of the Recently Deleted items need to be kept, that more than covers your average time that it would take someone to realize that they deleted something which wasn't supposed to be deleted. And there needs to be some way to permanently delete multiple items in the recently deleted folder at the same.

I have checked it before. The episode was marked less than 24 hours remaining, with the TiVo at 70%. The next day that episode was gone, and the TiVo was at 70% still with a couple of new shows recorded. Meanwhile, there are still shows (over 100) in the recently deleted folder from 2 or more years before. That was when I started going through and manually managing the Recently Deleted folder. Before that I had had the number of episodes to keep limit not delete oldest episodes but instead just refused to record new ones even though all existing episodes had been watched and were KUSIN; which lead to me manually deleting the old episodes when the episode limit is nearing the cap. These things still happen when I forget to do either.

New user here. I've had Tivo for 19 years (ver 1, ver 2, ver 4) - now using a Roamio w cable card. I put in a 6tb hard drive (works great) - but 2 weeks ago all programs were erased without warning.

Checked all setting, have no ideas why it did this. Figured this was a one-off.

Yesterday it erased everything again (no files in recently deleted). Called customer service - complete waste of time. I'm tempted to put the 500gb hard drive back in to see if it fixes this.

I'm posting this as a FYI (I will t-shoot on my end as well) - if I find any answer I will post it.

I assume related to the 6TB upgrade. You might want to try an Clear and Delete Everything as the issue sounds familiar (I seem to recall posts where users had upgraded and it was recording but then recordings would go away when the TiVo rebooted). How did you do the upgrade to 6TB?

Yes - I believe the 6TB drive is somehow the culprit. It was a pre-formatted drive and I have an email into the vendor. I've purchased from the vendor before w/out issue. My other concern is that several of the scheduled recordings are eliminated (I have to re-select them) - so this is more than a storage issue.

I did a complete system reset earlier - I might do that again, seeing as I don't have much to lose. Any links you find to similar issues appreciated - I will continue my search. Right now all sports programming is shut down, so I'm not recording much (let's hope the nc-virus subsides).

Ah so pre-formatted? You definitely need to do a Clear and Delete Everything and I would go ahead and do so again if that's what you meant by you did a system reset.

Good idea - I did a "reset" not a Clear & Delete. Now that Premier league is cancelled :,( I have nothing else to watch.

    Thanks again

Hi not sure if this is worth mentioning - I read (pretty much!) this whole tread and it seems as if some very helpful people gave some very good information, but don't think the OP's problem was ever fixed? Or did I miss that?

Regardless last night my 1TB Roamio, with many things in the deleted folder and about 75% full, at some point decided to delete about 25% of my recordings - now I'm at around 50% (and yes I realize that math is not quite right!) Anyway I was downloading a couple things (like the OP) but from Tivo Desktop, and just flipping the channels, and when I went to my Movies folders saw it was empty (had about 6). Then saw other random deletions - the first two episodes of 'Better Call Saul' deleted but the latest 2 still there. Three baseball playoff games deleted but 1 still remained. Two of 'This Is Us' remain - 3 deleted (and so on). And the kicker (in my stomach) was the 'Recently Deleted' folder was empty.

First suspected family - sorry family - but of course they had nothing to do with it. Now considering one of the on-sale Bolts (which apparently are not well-regarded), the Xfinity box, or nothing - and just hope it was a one-timer. Posting this mostly in case someone else had the same issue on 3/15/20 and wants some miserable company - but also hey if someone has a magic fix I'm all ears! Thanks.

Thanks for posting, DaJoos........it's not my imagination.
It only happens to me when I try to transfer FROM my pc TO my TiVo Premier XL.
I lose everything not KUID........and, with more than 50% free space.

Don't you have to prep. hard drives bigger than 3 TB? You can't just throw them in and expect them to work.
