I am going on 3 days now with comcast and stll have not got cable cards working in my series 3. I keep getting a upgrading cable card 1 firmware update and it goes for about an hour than tv comes on for a few seconds and then it stars over. The Tech tried installing 2 cards at once the first time and a no go. Then they brought over two new cards and I insisted on following th instructions exactly. Put in the first card and the host id info screen came on and before we could call the info in the firmware screen came up again and I am stuck in the same loop again. These are SA PKM600 cards. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The comcast tech stopped at my house yesterday and informed my wife that they didn't install cablecards in tivo devices! He left four cable cards and called the office to activate them.

I installed them in two Tivo 3 units last evening. Got no error messages and was able to receive digital and HD channels, but no premium channels on either machine. From what I read this is a problem with "pairing" which I admit to not understanding.

Does anyone have advice as to how I best phrase this issue when I call comcast today to get the best response?

    Thanks,

    LG

I had this "never ending" cablecard firmware upgrade several times and when it happens it's a ***** . Last time I had 9 different cablecards until one of them worked but has never been authorized (I am getting all premiums and everything looks fine). This upgrade is probably a bug and your cable company should call Scientific Atlanta and see if they can stop it. This has nothing to do with the Tivo, I have 3 TVs with cablecard and when it happens the dreadful firmware upgrade "stcks' to the card and if you move it to another cablecard capable TV the problem is the same.

Well, I have been talking directly with the dispacher at Comcast and the have a case # with "DVE" which I assume is the solutions center they go to when problems get escalated. According to them they are missing the EFI firmware file on the system therefore the cable card keeps scanning the frequencies but never finds it. It then times out after 60 minutes and then starts the process again. They have given a time frame of 24hrs to recieve the file from Scientific Atlanta and get it on the system. I hope this works, I am going to try again tomorrow arround 1:00pm and see what happens. This is so frustrating!

Thanks. Please, keep us posted. This is a major issue for me and the main reason why I had so many CC replaced. Every time this happens , it's a nightmare. My cable company is very small (Atlantic Broadband) and very technically chalenged. BTW, what is this EFI firmware file you mentioned?

From what I understand the EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) file must be broadcast from your local provider in order for the the cablecard to see it and download the update, otherwise it just continually scans through all the frequencies. My feeling is that the cable company should update the firmware on their cards in the shop before it gets to the customer but unfourtunatly nobody here is very familiar with cablecards so I doubt anyone even knew about the firmware updates fo the SA cards. It is a big learning curve for them. Out of the three tech's that came to my house, none of them had done a sucsessful cablecard install. I will see later this afternoon if I get anywhere with this.

I had the same issues. Search my posts of last week. Initially the cable company suggested replacing the cards (I also had SA PKM600 cards). When the second engineer failed to bring the replacement cards, I contacted TWC next day. I ended up speaking to a very knowledgeable engineer in the home office. He reset the settings in their server end and I reinstalled the same cards (with him on the phone). The firmware upgraded in 1-2 minutes and all worked fine since.

Obviously I cannot be for sure but I certainly feel that they throw out "replace that card" way too quickly. I honestly feel the person at the server end can make it work for you. You might want to call your cable company and ask for a "specialist in cable cards".

Supposedly the file has been uploaded but no change, still in the neverending firmware loop. They are coming out again tonight with more new cards, I am getting so fed up, I mean does it really have to be so hard? I will also try to call and get support from comcast myself.

    User x,

Tell them you need series 2007 cable cards (specifically when dealing with SA cards). I've had 3 people from Cox Cable all say the earlier cable cards will NOT successfully update with a TiVo after having this problem myself. Solution: swapped a 2005 series card for a new 2007 model and everything is working since.

I hope you are right. Last time I had the never ending firmware upgrade ,the cable company brought very new cards (dated 05-15-07) and none of them worked. I now have 3 cablecards, 2 dated Feb 07 and one April 05. 1 has been paired (the oldest) and 2 have never been but all 3 work for all channels. Clearly they don't know anything about cablecards at the cable company and they totally ignore that a cablecard firmware upgrade is even possible. They obviously try to blame on the S3 but in my case I have 3 TVs with cablecard slots and the problem was exactly the same.

Ok, thanks for that info mriechers. All the cards they have brought so far have been dated 4/15/06 and they told me that they were the most recent ones they had on the shelf. I can only hope they bring up to date cards tonight (I am waiting for them to show up as I write this). If not I will request this for my next visit.

Working at last!! Well I had an appointment from 5-7 last night and nobody showed up until 7:30 but the tech that came out was the most helpfull so far so it was worth the wait. Long story short, we replaced the 4-15-06 cards with ones from 2-15-06 (only ones he had) . The first one came up no problem, called it in and within 15 minutes I was recieving digital and HD channels on one tuner. Then we tried the next card, same date and got the dreaded firmware update again. Then we tried a third card and that one set up as well with no problem like the last. I still dont know what the real cause of the problem was. Maybee SA just has horrible quality control on there cards? I went through 6 cards in total before I got 2 that worked! I am so happy that this week long struggle is over though.

Congrats, just hope you never see the firmware upgrade again. 6 cards to get 2 good ones is a good average. I had 11 to get one to work last time. We must figure why and who is sending this upgrade. Since I already had this 4 times I am a bit skeptical I no longer will see it.

My TivoHD, after working for a couple months, is now stuck in the dreaded "upgrading cable card 1 firmware" loop.

How/when are you supposed to remove the cablecard to try a new one, when the Tivo warns against removing it during the (endless) firmware upgrade?

I've yet to have my cable card installation being that I just bought the TIVO HD. Reading these horror stories and knowing how inept TWC is has be second guessing my decision to even get Tivo.

Oh NO! we just got stuck in the upgrading loop yesterday on card #2. Comcast can't send anyone out until Thursday.

Unplugged #2 card to so now we can at least watch one channel with cable card #1.

Hope he brings a lot of cards Thursday!

You just unplug the TiVo first then remove the card.

We just unplugged the card #2 didn't bother to unplug TIVO as we'd already tried that and the problem still persisted.

Sounds like if the card gets stuck in firmware update, it's junk and won't ever work. Waiting for Comcast to come today with a new card.
