I have a first generation Phillips TiVo box HDR312. Suddenly the only sound I'm getting from the TiVo box is static. If you crank the volume, you can hear sound mixed with the static but very faint. Picture still looks great, every thing else functions normally.

When I bypass the TiVo (or put it on standby) and connect cable or DVD straight into the tv, I get perfect sound. I've tried it on two TV's.

Weaknees suggested it might be the power source. Anyone know what else could be causing the loss of sound.

Does restarting the TiVo do anything?

I've tried restarting about a dozen times thinking it would help. Unfortunately, the problem remains.

What do you get if you use the RF out connection from the TiVo? Is the noise continuous, even in menus, or only in shows? Have you tried replacing the cables?

I've tried different cables with the same results. The audio problem happens if I just use RCA plugs, or if I just use the coaxial cable. It definitely seems to be a lack of audio output from the TiVo.

I'm tempted to try swapping out the power supply, but it costs $50 and quite possibly might not solve the problem.

I agree that if the video is fine, replacing the power supply isn't going to help.

Do the TiVo sound effects in the menu also have this problem?

Yes, sound effects are also effected.

In that case, I would say that this TiVo is trying to tell you that it wants you to replace it with a newer one.
