Anson Mount is ripped! The Swede is my favorite character though. I really want to know more about him.

If I were Durant, the first place I'd look for the survey maps would be Lily's husband's grave.

Another episode featuring Bohannon as the world's worst foreman.

Looks like Bohannon figured out the pepper juice thing when he was licking his finger.

The writers certainly did not think through the whole betting on the fight situation. They could not have made it more implausible if they tried.

Drunk, vengeful, former slave owners usually make great foreman!

I think he gets a pass for being a poor foreman when his qualifications are "I killed the previous foreman".

I don't know if I like this show because it's good or because I miss Deadwood and it's the only western game in town.

When Bohannon "applied" for the foreman job, he said how he was a great natural leader whose men would follow him through hell. We've seen no evidence of that.

Please explain. It looked to me like the white guys bet on the white guy and the black guys bet on the black guy. Just like I thought it would be. The only exception was the Irish guy who cheated with the pepper juice.

None of them had been paid in 2 weeks so there probably wasn't much cash to be bet. According to the Irish guy, the odds on Elam were 30-1. Anyone betting on Bohannon would have had to risk $30 just to win $1. At those odds there was probably no action on Bohannon.

I thought they said the walking bosses would be the only ones to get paid, but not until the payroll came in and that was after the fight. I could be wrong.

Did they get paid from petty cash? My memory sucks.

oh yeah, I remember petty cash being mentioned now. Seems like it was dismissed as an option. I don't know.

I gathered that Durant's threats to the banks worked, and they got the money the next day. Bohannon pays the walking bosses, and the bosses pay the workers.

Yes, I know they got paid AFTER the fight. The question was whether they had any cash to bet with.

They are in the middle of nowhere, other than spending at the camp where else are the going to spend the money?

Plenty of ways to spend it all right there in camp. Liquor, whores, the Irish brothers magic lamp show.

And apparently the tent spaces aren't cheap either!

Remember that since NOone was getting paid, there was probably a decent sized "informal IOU" economy working at the camp -- it isn't like the workers could run off and hide from the rest of the camp.

Also remember that odds on a 2 outcome wager don't necessarily reflect the true chances of the outcome, if set properly they should balance the amount wagered on both sides so that the bookie makes money on the difference between the two sets of odds. Since the white folks had a lot more money that the black folks, and the perception that the fix was likely in for Bohannon, 30-1 isn't too outrageous.

But who would lay 1 for 30 on Bohannon?
