What is the best type of drive and capacity to install in the 1 TB OTA? Is it best to go with a Green, NAS or Surveillance type drive? I'd like to have 2-4 TB.

Assuming you are talking about the Roamio OTA, the go to drives are the WD Reds, and the 3TB will automatically configure itself.
This is if you are still on TE3, if you have upgraded to the latest HYDRA/MIRA software, you better check in the upgrade forums regarding any possibly upgrades at all.

Yes it is the Romaio OTA and yes it is running the hydra/new TiVo experience. I bought it in October 2017 and it updated to that out of the box. I have never used the older TiVo software on it.

It is generally getting to be 70% full all the time. I am thinking I should have a bit more space or I'm going to need to be more agressive with deleting and moving things I want to keep to Plex.
I actually was looking at the WD red 3TB on Newegg

    Hi,
I am not up on hd compatibility with Hydra, I know there were some issues with Bolts a while ago, that's why I suggested checking in with the folks on the upgrade forum first.

If you are going to save the shows and passes, use KMTTG to download them to your PC/Mac prior to swapping out drives. You would also need to downgrade down to v20.7x because v21.x has issues on drive prep, but doing it will delete everything on the current drive.

Having just installed a 3TB drive in a 500GB Bolt box, it is a true pleasure not having to worry about space. ("What, a "Law and Order SVU" marathon on, on Saturday? Sure, just record it all!" :) ) Having said that, I know that I need to cull thru all the recordings--let's face it, when am I ever going to watch it all (or want to)?

I did both of my Roamios a couple months back with the 3TB WD Red drives from Amazon. My systems were on latest version of Hydra and everything self configured. Was back up and running in about 30 minutes per box (including adding a cable card bracket and fan upgrade). I didn't transfer anything as we'd watched most of what we had already. Hard drive swap was really easy.

I replaced the Roamio OTA factory 500GB with a 2TB WD WD20EURX I ordered from Amazon for $49.99. Very simple to do.

Are Western Digital drives the only tested drives. What about Hitachi and Seagate drives

It has to do with the power consumption (and excess heat generated,) the small power supplies make only a few models work, such as the WD Red. It also has to endure 24/7 read/write activity for up to 6 tuners.
