My hard drive died. When I replace it, is all I need to do is put in a new hard drive? Or do I need to install some hardware.

    What unit?
Roamio and Bolt...slap new drive in. simple as that. The Tivo does the rest
Premiere and before....need a image of the particular model before putting in Tivo. There are threads in those sections for asking for one

Thanks. It is a Roamio OTA. If a hard drive is all I need, I will pick up one after work.

yup. You can use up to a 3TB drive with no extra work...make sure its a 5400rpm drive and not a 7200...7200's run warmer and could do damage (takes more power for Tivo to run it)
Put drive in and power up. It will load the image on it and have you go through guided setup

    couldnt be easier

Use the recommended WD RED drives (IE. WD30EFRX.)

Is the recommended drive, now, the red over the green (has the green been retired)?

WD Green drives are not made any more and those sold currently are now way overpriced.

Green is also more noisier then the Reds with all the activity in a Tivo.

I have a WD 4TB Red in a Roamio and a WD 1TB Green in a Series 3 and the S3 is louder then the Roamio. Just need to have an ear near them, but can hear them on a very quiet night.

Thanks--I thought that might be the explanation, I haven't been keeping up with my greens and reds (let alone blues and purples).

I agree. a 2TB red in a Roamio and a 1TB green in a TivoHD and same experience with the noise

Question, will this red WD drive fit in a Bolt? I read in another forum that the internal HD needs to be 2.5" not 3.5" and I've got the four flashing lights on my Bolt and I'm trying to decide what to do with it.

All WD Red drives are 3.5 inch and barely fit in the Bolt.

Ok so I will go with this one if you say it fits in the bolt. Now to find some instructions on how to do it.

That isn't what I meant. It barely fits inside due to the size and the cover will not close fully.

My wife and I record a lot of shows so I’m thinking we will need the 3 TB. Back to the drawing board. I’m thinking about having the hard drive sit outside the bolt as I’ve seen in several other threads but I’m a little worried that my little one will just pick it up and toss it since it will be at her level.

You are correct that only a 2.5" drive will fit in a Bolt. There is absolutely no room for a 3.5" drive inside a Bolt. You will need to externalize the internal SATA port of the Bolt to use a 3.5" drive.
