Ok so I was having a problem with my Series 2 Toshiba Tivo where on playback I'd get breakup/freezing. Based on what I've read that is a common sign of a bad hard drive. Tried Kickstart 57 with no luck so I thought I was out of luck. However I noticed that the HD was seeking a lot and thought I'd try deleting all the recordings on the assumption that the hard drive had become too fragmented. Well I deleted everything (put it in the trash and then deleted them again) and now my recordings are perfect. Whether this is because I'm now missing the bad sectors or because it's no longer fragmented is hard to say but IMHO it's worth a try for anyone who's experiencing the early signs of hard drive failure.

    Tivo drives don't fragment. It's a fluke.
