Is a the hard drive in the Tivo, different then a regular hard drive? Such as the ones in your computer, or empty ones you can buy?

    Thanks

Not really, There are some special drives that are optimized for the TiVo, peruse the Underground->Playground-> TiVo Upgrade Center section for information. The Series1 & 2's use EIDE drives while the new Series3 contains a SATA drive. Most off the shelf drives can be configured for use in a TiVo. If you are not familiar with the innards of a PC then I suggest you get a pre-configured drive from WeaKnees or PTVUpgrade.

So, are you saying that I could take an empty hard-drive, and the Tivo will automaticly format it for use?

No. It needs to be specially formatted and contain the proper data. Take a look at the TiVo Upgrade Center board on this very site for more information.

You need to install the TiVo software on it - but the drive itself is standard. See the upgrading section of this forum for details.

No, the Tivo will not automatically format a new hard drive. Just like a PC, you need an operating system for the Tivo to boot. Tivo runs on a Linux kernel. You need to format the drive and install the Tivo operating system. Each model Tivo requires specific code. You can buy a preloaded drive or you can copy your existing drive, including your programs, using utilities like instacakes.

No, the drive needs to be formatted and TiVo software for your model of TiVo installed on the drive first. If you want a ready to "Drop in" drive see WeaKnees or PTVUpgrade.
