I really don't know how they can be so incompetent, though considering how they're handling the TiVo assets they've acquired, it should come as no surprise. The guided data is horrible. They're especially bad at having consistent initial air dates for programs, if they show up at all.

Comcast & DirecTV all currently use Gracenote - 100% guarantee you, as I have both (TV) services, along w/DISH. (I also believe Uverse does as well...but I don't have it personally)
Yes, DISH switched from Gracenote to Rovi, right at the same time Tivo did...& suffered, & still does to this day, the same crappy data issues that Tivo subs do.

From a statement from someone who was involved in the guide choice negotiation(s) at a small company at one point, Rovi reps made a not so subtle suggestion that if you purchased their guide service they would include certain patent licensing. It was the equivalent of "It would be a shame if someone sued you for using certain on-screen functionality....". For a number of companies, it was apparently cheaper to switch to Rovi than to pay the lawyers for fighting the lawsuit, and/or removing the functionality that Rovi claimed IP upon.

Gracenote had the occasional issues but this Rovi data is awful.
Yesterday on Cartoon Network I was missing almost 10 hours of schedule data - it went from 7:30pm with a half hour show to 3:30am on the next show. NEVER seen that before.

Dish using Rovi is why I probably would go with DirecTV if I ever went the satellite route.

In my opinion, that seems dirty.

Would Xperi go out of business if, hypothetically, we restricted software patents to say three years? This would prevent copycats from taking innovative ideas.

Unless they have changed recently, DirecTV was one of the many who left Gracenote for Rovi. Again, mysteriously, almost ALL the big MVPD's (with one exception, possibly Comcast? I can't remebmer correctly) left Gracenote and jumped to Rovi all at about the same time. Considering Nielsen's announcement of planning to increase the value of its newly acquired Gracenote metadata, then followed by all their customers jumping ship, and an insider at Dish posting that it was ". . . not Dish's intention or plans to leave Gracenote . . ." makes it all sound very fishy. Gracenote bad metadat; Rovi/Tivo WORSE; by comparison, Gracenote looks better than it really is.

Interesting, since Rovi really was more of a patent portfolio company than it was a service company providing EPG data. Their patents were making Rovi much more money than selling EPG data.

Yeah, I could see small companies having almost no choice. I highly doubt that that big ones would flinch at that because if they can get a better price or better metedata product for the right price, it is better for their business. The legal costs would be the price of doing business, even with a settlement.

Then that is relatively NEW. TiVo's webpage as of last year or so did list DirecTV along with quite a few other big ones as users of TiVo EPG and metadata. I guess Grancenote must have come to their senses.

Love how the guide broke up Morning Joe on MSNBC into 3 parts now. Instead of one 3 hour show. This causes the recordings to get jumbled up. All so they can get two extra pre roll commercials.

Same with Dateline Whitehouse. Have you noticed that new news programs have dropped the season 2020? I think they keep hiring new people who like to change things.

In TE3 we don't have pre-roll commercials, but we still have Morning Joe as 3x 1-hour shows; the break-out into 3 shows started within the past week when a lot of the guide was "messed up" (putting it kindly).

Are you certain this is a side-effect of pre-roll commercials in TE3 also?

Today was 3 separate hours. I have to watch which hour plays after the first hour as it will be the 3rd hour.
I am out side doing a 5 mile walk when the show is on so I watch it during cooling off and breakfast. the 3rd hour is the same as the first except the last 20 minutes.

99% of the time the 8am to about 8:30am is a repeat of 6am. Check the bug. No "live" indicator at 8am is normal.

Thx for asking. What I was asking is about his comment that the bug of breaking 3hr shows such as Morning Joe was a result of pre-roll ads, but afaik only TE4 has pre-roll ads and we 1) have TE3 Bolt and Roamio, 2) both had the broken into-3 problem, and 3) I haven't heard of any effect pre-roll ads would have in TE3.
