Yeah, it's crazy, until I stumbled on the the zoom it was the only way to watch my frozen arrow recordings (which was most of them). I can't believe they would release whatever software is causing this without fully testing, well I guess Tivo customers ARE the testing process now..............

Just to let you know, I never had the blue spinning circle. For a few days before the pre-roll ads, the gray arrow screen would come up briefly (almost a flash, .5 - 1 second). I had read about the ads coming and thought that the gray arrow screen may have something to do with them.
When the pre-roll ads started there were just a few of them (which seemed novel and interesting and I wanted to see how bad they were).
The spinning in the middle of the gray arrow screen was more like three small white dots, that would spin for around a second or two and they only showed up before the ads (as if the ad was loading).
During the few days of ads, I got into the habit of not doing anything if I didn't see the spinning dots (which seemed to mean that there would be no ad) and letting the recording play, it would take a couple of seconds to play. If I did see the spinning dots, I would press skip right away and the recording would play within 2 or 3 seconds.
The number of recordings with the ads increased over time, so before the frozen screen started, I think most (70% - 90%) of the recordings had pre-roll ads.
I didn't notice any difference between old recordings and new ones, though there may have been, but they seemed about the same to me.

The Zoom button is the Exit button, they are the same.

On TE3, you can press Zoom/Exit to immediately exit the menus and return to full screen video (whether it's a playback or live TV). I use it all the time instead of pressing "back" several times.

(I'm on TE3. No Hydra for me.)

Have you considered calling customer support? I imagine they'll ask you to reboot your box. If it still freezes, then keep trying to get it resolved. Hopefully it reaches a point that they'll give up and want to just escalate it to the appropriate department.
