I'm on a stock original S3 Tivo and looking for a good deal on an external hardrive. Any recommendations? I was hoping since the original S3 has less external hardrive restrictions, that there may be better/cheaper options out there?

How about the Fantom GreenDrive 1TB USB 2.0/eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive GD1000EU for $80?

My vote is to just go with internal expansion. I dislike the external driver/marrage approach and I see them as yet another possible point of failure for the future (one drive is more likely to fail if you've got 2 required).

I don't really care about potentially loosing my recorded shows but it would be nice to have an extra 250 Gigs to draw from in addition to a 1 TB drive. If I do decide to swap internal instead, how time consuming will it be for a basic skill computer guy to learn how to copy my drive info to the new drive so as to retain my season-pass manager/thumb up/down settings ect... ?
Iv'e never opened a Tivo before.

    S3 with led display- TCD648250B
I understand these are the only HD Tivos that will support un-official ext. drives.

yes they will support non-official external drives but I'd still rather just drop a 1 TB drive in the unit and call it done.

Basically buy a WB Green Drive 1TB for $70 or less.
Disable intellapark (#29 in the linked post)
Use WinMFS to clone tivo drive to new drive.
    Pop in new drive.

DVR dude on ebay and dvrstore.com is offering two different 2 TB pre-imaged drives for original S3. A WD20EARS for $150 and a WD20EVDS (WD AV-GP) for $200. He claims to use special tools to make these WD drives compatible with Tivo. Is this right? Is the AV-GP model worth the extra $50?

How are peoples experience with 2 TB drives on S3 Tivo. I think I remember hearing they might be slugish.

See point 14 for details, and how to resolve the issue.

The best external drive for a TiVo is a computer with a *big* NTFS partition running the free version of TiVo Desktop.
