Ok, I will say it right now. That was my favorite Glee episode so far!

First of all, any show with NPH is going to be good. Seeing him sing both Piano Man and Dream On was awesome!

I knew they were going for Idena Menzel being Rachael's mom. It was almost too obvious. But I am surprised that was why she had Jesse hook up with Rachael.

Finally, Safety Dance was my favorite performance of the season. That was the perfect video (and fun to see Artie out of his wheelchair.)

My main disappointment this episode was no Britney line.
But did you notice the open yearbook to the picture of the Glee club? My husband came it to make fun of me…I mean talk to me, so I just happened to pause it on that frame.

The list of names of the Glee club members is under the picture. The last names listed are Santana Lopez and Britney. No last name….just Britney. That made me chuckle.

Is the Safety Dance performance with the contest winners who won a guest appearance on Glee? If so that was a great use of them.
Doubtful, considering the choreography involved - in fact, some sites list a few known (at least in the dance profession) dancers involved in that scene.

Did anyone else notice in the "Safety Dance" number that a number of shots (mainly from escalators, apparently) looked like they were being filmed on camcorders?

I noticed that it was the "2009" yearbook - I assume they mean the 2009-2010 school year, as the club didn't exist in 2009 (it was brought back at the beginning of the school year).

As for the episode itself, the musical numbers were excellent, but the main plot with NPH was just awful - better put it in Spoiler Space just in case:
"Hi, I'm the newest member of the school board, and I'm going to cut all funding for Glee Club because it made me a wreck."
"I miss the singing every day!"
"The local community theater is doing Les Miz - you should try out for it, like I am"
"What a coincidence - we're both trying out for the male lead!"
"I've seen the light - here's everything a Glee Club needs to be successful...what's that? Mr. Shuster got the lead, and I got a part with no songs and one line? I've seen the darkness again - Glee Club is being cut."
"You can have the lead, in exchange for not cutting Glee Club."
"Deal...oh, mister director, I'm your new lead (and never mind that you had no say in the matter, and even if I am a total flop and get cut during rehearsals, I won't cut Glee Club out of spite anyway)"
"Glee Club is saved - now, let us never speak of this again"
And why do I have the feeling that...
...the coach of Vocal Adrenaline being Rachel's real mother is about as real as Tina's stuttering turned out to be?
Now watch, despite the horrendous directing in Safety Dance, Joss Whedon end up winning an Emmy for this episode.

Perhaps not the dancers themselves - but what about the members of the crowd watching the dancers?

Yes, a couple of us did, earlier in this thread.

Note to self - check all of the pages of a thread before making a "Did anyone else..." comment.

As has been pointed out, there has been at least one Glee-based flash mob. I expect the crowd to be just local Glee fans, and may some people who just happened to be in the mall at the time.

Note that the scene was almost certainly recorded somewhere in California, as you can see a Jollibee's restaurant, and, outside of California, the only two cities in North America that have them are Las Vegas and somewhere in Queens, New York.

The sales bump for the original recordings is substantial-
http://articles.latimes.com/2010/apr/27/entertainment/la-et-glee-music-20100427

After a September episode featured a cover of Jazmine Sullivan's "Bust Your Windows," a Latin-flavored vamp that peaked at No. 31 on Billboard's Hot 100 in 2008, sales of the original record shot up to 2,945 units the following week, up 231% from 891 the week before.

The percentage increase is substancial, but the raw numbers aren't.

So happy that they did the right thing and had Idina Menzel turn out to be Rachel's mom. I want to say I called it back when she first appeared on the show, but IIRC, I actually said I felt like they wasted a great opportunity. Turns out they didn't.
I wouldn't take that to be gospel. It's clear that the tape was a fake and not really from her mother. He did it to make Rachel happy.

Now, it might end up being sledgehammer foreshadowing but there's no way to know just yet. Or did I miss something?

Miss something? Yep.

She explained, in logical detail, how she came to conceive, and why she was not approaching Rachel directly.

Now, the motivation behind her seeking out Rachel at this time is suspect: I think it may be to really mess with her head before the final competition. But perhaps some maternal feelings will dash these plans.

Who knows? Tune in next week, same Bat-time, same Bat-channel.

Oh. This was the first and only episode so I didn't know the rest. I just knew about the fake tape. Thanks.

Not the last show, just the first.

Since Joss has now directed, next season can we get an all original songs episode with songs penned by Jed and Marissa Tancharoen? Pretty please?
There was supposed to be an episode of original songs this season. I assume that it was shelved because they needed room for either the Madonna or Lady Gaga episodes.

I'm surprised there haven't been any original songs on the show already, considering that at least one original song would get an Emmy nomination (which would be a reason why an episode of original songs would probably have the songs written by different people).

Actually one of my favorite "small" moments of the show was Quinn reaching forward and touching Artie's shoulder as he sang Dream a Little Dream of Me. Such a small gesture done beautifully.

Where are you getting this "fake tape" stuff? Why do you think that it is "fake"? The mom said "did you give her the tape?"
I assume he means fake as in "not really a tape found in Rachel's box". When Rachel and what's-his-name were going through the boxes from her basement, what's-his-name distracted her then pulled the tape from his jacket pocket, pretending to find it in the box.

Okay it's "fake" as in "the dads really didn't save the tape for her in a box."

But it's a real tape, made by her actual bio-mother, who really did record a message on it for her to hear. Right? Because otherwise, I really am confused.

It's clear that the tape was a fake and not really from her mother.
This is the part that is confusing. How is it "clear" that the tape is not really from her mother? Her mother said she made the tape, so unless she is lying about being the (bio) mother, the tape is real and really from her mother.

Oh I missed that particular line by IJLT Magnolia. Yes, you are correct, the tape is most definitely a real tape made by her actual biological mother. It's 'fake' only in the fact that it isn't what it was made to appear to be - namely a tape which was made by her mother at the time of her birth and saved by her fathers all this time.

Just watched the episode again. One thing I forgot about was the dialog between Sue and Bryan. The both made excellent arguments why the arts and physical education is so important in our schools. In this age of budget cuts, too often these programs are the first to be cut. In many ways they can be just as important as the three Rs.
