This. If your phone can't handle spoilers, don't read the thread from your phone. Don't expect everybody else to forgo established spoiler procedures for your benefit.

As for back story, I think the way to go is label it as back story, and then put it in spoiler tags. That way people who don't want to get that extra information from other sources can easily avoid it, and people who want it can choose to open it. When providing back story, make sure that any future plot points are spoiler-nested.

Perhaps a thread for those who haven't read the books and a separate thread for those who have. Book readers should not post in the non-book thread but all can post in the other, expecting to be exposed to information that may not be in the show.

I really don't want to know what happens next week, or who's going to die or anything that I might expect to find in the book reader's thread. I appreciate if some of you will keep coming here and answering our questions like Aniketos said. :)

Maybe a 3rd thread for people who want to be a little bit spoiled, but not too much?

    ;)

Things would be a lot easier with a memory eraser.

Hmmmm...instead of watching new shows I could just watch my favorites, erase my memory of them, and watch them over and over again.

I'm solving this issue by reading the book and pre-spoiling everything. :)

Just to be clear, I want to restate that in the episode one thread, the book readers were asked not to fill up the thread with backstory information from the books, because the spoiler tags didn't work on phones, AND because the thread was disjointed from having two separate conversations in it.

Whether this request is fair or not isn't the issue with me. I and others were asked not to do something and I was willing to go along as a courtesy to the people who were trying to read on phones. The thread is supposed to be about the show and not the books. Too much talk about the books is off-topic.

However, I don't see the point of being gagged when someone else can come along and give out the same information, or erroneous information, under the guise of "speculation". And if you are posting about what's going to happen in future episodes, you aren't talking about the episode you've just watched anymore.

IMHO the rules are whacked. It's just like having smoking areas and non-smoking areas. Viewers who want to watch the present episode and enjoy that moment can't carve out a space for their discussion because there is always someone who complains that "the spoiler nuts need to lighten up", just like there is always someone at the bus stop who feels he has to light up and the non-smokers can just suck it.

It's like I was smoking, someone came along and asked me to put it out because my smoke was bothering him, I complied (because I have manners), and now someone else has come along with big obnoxious cigars that even bother me, and you're all telling me no, it's okay for people to smoke those, while I have to put out my cigarette.

    So yeah, I cry foul.

Are you saying people posting what they claimed was speculation are lying and have really read the book.

I think she's saying that there's a difficult line between

"I haven't read the book but I think Bubba BoBob Brain is really a mouse in an elaborate scheme to take over the world"

    And

"Yes, you are right, I've read the book and Bubba BoBob Brain IS really a mouse in an elaborate scheme to take over the world".

You really don't see a difference between speculation with no outside knowledge, and information based on outside sources?

The forum rules allow for speculation on what might happen, if it's based on nothing but your own thoughts on the show. They require information gleaned from outside sources to be in spoiler tags. It's a pretty clear line, to me.

You can say who you think should/will be voted out in Survivor next week. But if you are quoting a story from a blogger who got drunk with a producer who spilled the beans, you should put that in a spoiler tag. Same goes with scripted shows.

The fact that this is based on a series of books that a lot of people read means it's much easier to get the outside information; it doesn't change the basic rules of the forum.

That said, I think mentioning the differences between the books and the show for that given episode should absolutely be allowed in the show thread, with spoiler tags. It's what the spoiler tags are for, and is well within the forum rules. The fact that they don't display right on someone's phone means that person probably shouldn't read the thread (or any thread!) on their phone if they want to avoid ALL spoilers.

I could see that being a problem for the people who have read the book when the speculation is right and they know it.

No easy answers to this one.

That's why I just don't address speculation. AFAIC, speculation on GoT is purely a spectator sport (although one that I'm enjoying!).

Sure sounds like that is what is being suggested by the use of quotes and the word 'guise'.

Murgatroyd, do you really think that anyone here has such a needy personality that they would come into this thread having read the books, but pretend not to have and then try and look like some sort of genius by correctly "speculating" what has happened or will happen? Honestly, who has the time? I think if someone says they haven't read the books and say they are about to speculate, you should take them at their word. If you have read the books and know if the speculation is right or wrong, hold your tongue. Go post about it in the book thread.

If your phone doesn't read spoilers correctly, then don't read the Game of Thrones thread until you are at a proper computer. Is this really that complicated?

No but the rules as to what we can/cannot post here certainly are. :D Especially when dealing with such an intricate storyline as GOT.

It's getting so that I will spoiler tag anything I post in these threads.

I'm saying that if you are trying to take in the experience of the show as it takes place, and let the story reveal itself to you in the manner that the author intended, it doesn't matter whether the person revealing the info about Bubba BoBob Brain is speculating or actually knows. If you hadn't figured it out for yourself yet, the reveal is premature.

It seems weird to ban one kind of early reveal and not the other. The experience of watching the show is changed either way.

It is just bizarre to me that you could have been on TiVoCommunity since 2002 and this is the first time you've seen people speculating on where a show might go in future episodes.

    It's the national pastime here!

But isn't the experience of watching the show changed by reading others thoughts and opinions of it, even without speculation or spoilers? If you come to a thread like this at all, it is for the shared experience. People want to interact.
