It may be news to you, but it's old news to most of us. :)

More likely to be a final 6, not 8. Thirteen total, not fifteen.

It was said there wouldn't be the normal 10 but they never said specifically how many it would be until today's announcement.

Here's an interview in Variety with David & D.B. back in April where they said...
    Here's another from June...
Could it change? Yes, they might start writing out the endgame and realize they need a couple more. But they've been talking thirteen for several months.

I think the fact that they aren't coming out till summer instead of spring is new, is it not? Have I just been repressing that bit of sadness?

That news came out not long after the season finale aired, I think, so not that long ago.

It was rumored; now it's official.

With Winter Coming Here, it was obvious, though not yet officially announced, that principal photography would have to take place later than usual.

Wait what? I am just hearing about this right now? It won't start up again until next summer? I swear I haven't heard this, unless somehow I'm repressing this memory.

I can do this all day. I'm working through grief at the moment. I just found out GoT isn't coming back till next summer! :(

Given the way they write and shoot the show, with all episodes completely written before any shooting begins (because all episodes are shot simultaneously), I wouldn't be surprised if S7 (and perhaps all of the final episodes) are largely already written.

However, because GoT is so successful, and HBO has not had much success launching new dramas lately, and depending on how Westword fares this fall, it's entirely possible the network will put heavy pressure on Dan and David to pad the final seasons and try and milk this show for all it's worth.

Now that the Wheel of Time rights have been sorted out, I imagine HBO is working feverishly behind the scenes to see if they can't get a show out of that to follow Game of Thrones.

Doing it right is the hard part, but we all said that about Game of Thrones before it started, too.

Except that the GoT books are (for the most part though less so last few) done right to begin with. The Wheel of Time books went south a few in. I remember reading one very long book and at the end thinking "is anything really changed from when I started this book?" I understand that a lot of people kept going through them but I could never figure out why or how they could.

    Did they end well?

That would be "Path of Daggers". 600 pages of nothing happening as we checked in on everybody before we got to the new stuff.

Yes, they ended well. Brandon Sanderson wrote 3 volumes to tie it all up. They were amazing.

But a TV entity could do what HBO did and streamline the parts where people sit around and talk and tug on their braids and straighten their skirts.
