If this is the case, how do we fix it?

Well, as a data point, I run Galleon on Linux and have not been having the crashes with the Music app you guys are describing so I'm not sure it's related to the latest TiVo software.

you think it would do any good at all to reinstall tivo desktop on that comp?

Also, just to flesh this out, I can navigate through all of my music folders and subfolders, down to seeing individual tracks. As soon as I try to play or view one of the tracks, though, is when it quits and goes back to the initial Galleon menu.

Not really sure ... Galleon is a separate app and can run with or without TD. Obviously in my case it's "without" since I'm on Linux. You could give it a shot thiough.

How big is your music library you are playing? Does the crash happen when you are playing a large playlist? Or even on small ones? Is there a set time before it crashes?

See above (I just edited the post before yours). It happens even if I try to play a single song. But one change to what I put up there, I can actually hit "Select" and view a singular MP3 file, and see the cover art (which I've turned back on), rating, etc. But as soon as I hit Play or click the Play Now button on the song screen, Please Wait and back to the Galleon menu.

It's a rather large music collection, and what I usually do (and had, successfully, for quite some time) is hit play on the main Music folder (folders for genres under that, then artists, then albums) to randomize through the massiveness of it all. It was perhaps my favorite thing about having the TiVo wireless setup.

And now I can't get it to play a single file. The specific time is immediately.

    Hmm ... interesting.

You could try uninstalling/re-installing Galleon. Maybe one of the .jar files related to MP3 playback is messed up.

Or, if you don't want to do the whole uninstall/re-install thing yet, try shutting down Galleon and then deleting the database, which is everything under the /data subdirectory. Then start it up again. That will force it to re-index your library.

Great minds think alike. That was the first thing I tried this morning. Unfortunately, no dice. I've rebooted the TiVo, the router, the server machine, and I guess maybe uninstall-reinstall is on the horizon. Maybe I'll do the same with Sun Java too.

Wow, I didn't realize you couldn't play anything. I thought it just sometimes quit. BTW, when you select a single song, it still "selects" everything in that same directory. Try one where there is only one song in that directory. Also, are you using any windows shortcuts in the path to the music (.lnk files). Are any of them on network shares or mapped drives? Also, what happens if you run galleon not as a service? Maybe it's a permission level thing. When you run it as a service, it's running as the SYSTEM user.

Initially, that was the case. In the last few days (Sunday was when it became most evident) it's become an instantaneous thing. Sucks all kind of eggs.
I'll have to make such a directory later on today and try.
    Nope.
No, they're all on an external hard drive connected via USB 2.0 to the server machine.
I'm afraid you've lost me here. How can Galleon run as anything other than a service? In any case, I've only administrator level accounts, so I don't think it would be a permission thing (though I can obviously be mistaken).

guess it's down to uninstall reinstall unless anyone has any better ideas. Hope it works.

Went ahead, uninstalled then reinstalled Galleon. Now it craps out every time, but differently. Usually it'll generate an error of Out of Memory (which is displayed on the TiVo screen....there was a point in the past when I wrestled with out of memory exceptions, but those were on the comp). Sometimes it'll say the application closed during a read.

End result is the same: no musica!

An out of memory on your tivo? Is it a tivo message rather than an HME app? i.e. does it have the standard blue tivo background? If that's the case, that's an out of memory on your tivo itself not in the galleon application. Sounds like a more serious problem which would explain why a reinstall didn't work.

This new install seems to have different log files. There's a wrapper log and a derby log. which one should i post?

I'm attaching the wrapper log, just in case, since it seems to be noting some irregularity.

Just tried running the music app from the TiVo. It hangs for a bit after I hit play on a folder, then actually starts and plays 1 song, but while the song is playing and before the Galleon screen of the song (with art and stars, etc.) loads, it goes to a Tivo Blue "Can't Run" screen that says "An error occurred while running the application. Out of memory." The song continues playing, and in fact, keeps playing even if I hit the TiVo or Watch Live TV buttons.

Alternately, it will say "The application closed during a read."

Well, how about that. After rebooting the Tivo (for the first time since the Galleon reinstall), the music app is working as it should. so far, so good, though as I write this it's only midway through the first song.

If it hold up, i won't ask why. If not, I'll be back.

Thanks to all y'all. I really appreciate the help. It seems the combination of reinstall and reboot did the trick. And like I said, as long as it works, I'm not asking any questions.

well, to say it's "working" might be a bit of a misnomer. It still craps out after a given period of time, but this is the best it's been in a while. Just have to restart the music app when it happens.

But I wonder about s2kdave's theory about a memory issue on the tivo itself. any way I can determine if that's the case?

Glad it's "kinda" working. How about another log post from when it crapped out after a few minutes again?

Your wrapper log had a few JVM errors in it. Which version of Java are you using?
