    I was in the Fry's on Northwest hwy. (near 635) today.

    They had three of 'em when I was there.

    Knowing Fry's, I wouldn't be surprised if they were refurbs.

    So? If they are, they would be labeled as such.

    I am just saying, the great price may be for a refurb, not a new TiVo.

    Sealed NIB. No refurbs, no returns. From what I've been reading, it's probably the most they can hope to get for these boxes. Seems that within 12 months they'll be good for nothing other than OTA recording.

    If you use cablecards you're probably OK. Supposedly TiVo is working with the providers to compensate for the changes coming that will impact the S3. I had no interest in 'renting' a cable card just in order to have guide data - that's what I pay TiVo for. Plus, I didn't want to deal with this add-on they're coming up with.

    I liked this box so much and have wanted it for so long that I was willing to get it even though I have satellite. I use basic cable for backup and since the HD locals are embedded in this tier, I only needed a good HD recorder. But as I discovered reading through nearly 2 years of discussions, TiVo does not allow mapping of channels that can be received to ones that are in the official TiVo Guide data for my area, i.e. the QAM channels that are in the clear.

    I've yet to understand why they included the feature to 'scan' the entire "cable" band to find what channels were available when you have no way to map those channels to those in the Guide. Had I simply been able to tell the box that 11-1 is the same as my local channel 11, I would have kept it. Half my recording is via locals anyway.

    Thanks for the tip, I picked one up today. The box looked like it has been sitting there since the S3 came out and knowing Fry's its possible.

    I was tempted with the recently expired rebate but the hassle of a rebate was enough to talk myself out of it.

    I'd like manual remapping too, but I think it makes sense that the feature is there -- it shows what channels the Tivo knows it can get. That is, it might *uncheck* just as many channels as it checks, since the guide data might have more channels in it than you can actually get.

    This also allows the software to be a bit simpler

    if (userselectsscanoption)
    DoChannelScan();

    rather than
    if (userselectsscanoption)
    {
    if (CableCardInstalled())
    DoChannelScanIncludingQAM();
    else
    DoChannelScanWithoutQAM();
    }

    ARGH, it removes my indenting when it saves.

    I will never understand why Tivo hasn't provided clear QAM mapping in the software updates -- it would be so easy to implement. Is it some sort of CableLabs licencing BS?

    As I recall, Fry's has been caught selling returned and refurbished items as new. I'm not saying that they are still doing it, but they (again, as I recall) have done so in the past.

    Use {code}{/code}. (Replace the braces with brackets.)

    Code:
    Start
         Indent
    End

    It wouldn't surprise me but the one I bought was well sealed external and internal. The production date on the back is 12/2006, box looked like it was sitting in the store since then. It also still has 8.0 loaded on it
