One down, three to go (V, The Event and No Ordinary Family). Quiet, naysayers! ;)

Was just coming here to post this. All along, the Friday ratings seem to have been good enough to clear the bar set by Fox, but this is still great news for a show that has been doing killer work this entire season.

Wow. That is rather surprising news. I guess they were satisfied with the admittedly weak to adequate ratings it was getting on Friday night.

Between this and Terra Nova, pretty soon Fox will be running more sic-fi than SyFy.

More than. The most recent episode did poorly, mainly due to college basketball and daylight savings. But overall ratings have been what Fox wanted. From EW:

Critical praise for the drama has never been stronger and its performance on Fridays is still better than how the network was doing on the night in the fall. In fact, Fox reports that Fringe is the No. 1 show on the night this season — across both broadcast and cable — and that the drama has improved the network’s average on the night by 38%.

Exactly, I think only the last episode did really bad due to various reasons but other weeks seemed to be OK. I'm glad this got renewed though--with a couple of shows ending this year and the new offerings not getting renewed, I'm running dangerously low on good shows to watch. This is a big win.

Some similarities, yes, in that both series focus on FBI agents who investigate paranormal and other "fringe" elements (hence the name of this series).

The styles of the shows are quite different, however. This isn't nearly as dark and murky a series as The X Files was. No little grey men aliens that I can recall on Fringe, nor government conspiracies lurking around every corner. As such, Fringe doesn't really convey the same sense of paranoia/despair/etc. that you may have gotten from The X Files. Also, the overriding theme in The X Files of doubt vs. belief isn't really a major theme on Fringe.

The X-Files does not deserve to smell Fringe's $#!t!
