Just found a receiver from 2012 in my closet. Direct tv didnt want it back and I have no idea what to do with it. The reciever ID# 0355 8467 6668 Model number is HR24-200 mfr date is 2-22-2012.
The front of the receiver says Direct tv+HD DVR

Ask DirecTV if you can give it away (or sell) and the other party would be able to activate. Most of their boxes are leased, and even if they do not want it back, it cannot be activated on another account. If that is the case it is best to recycle it at most any consumer electronics store.

I dropped mine off at best buy. You could probably resell the remote on ebay for $5 or so. If it was lightly used, you could repurpose the hard drive. You'll need security torx to get it out.

HR24 is still a perfectly good box. The trick is whether DirecTV would activate it again on your account if you ever wanted to use it again. With the HS17, they won't add any additional boxes at all, so it would have to go on an HR54 system.
