You could argue this is not the place to put this item or indeed that it has been covered before but can anyone help.
Having removed the old IDE 40GB Quantum drive from my Tivo I wish to use it elsewhere in a Windows Environment. No doubt like many people before me when viewing the drive and going through the normal disk management tools to format the drive, it is shown as having far less capacity than 40GB. How please do I format it and get my full capacity back.

I suspect you need to unlock it - google "tivo qunlock.exe".

Thanks. Am I right in thinking I have to operate thus file from within linux. I downloaded the exe file but when opening it in Windows I saw very briefly a black screen with some text on it( too quick to read) which then promptly disappeared.

You need to create a DOS boot disc with qunlock on it, and boot from that. No Windows or linux required.

Once unlocked, as your drive could have been thrashing itself 24/7 for 10 years, don't use it for anything important!

No, it is not a Linux executable. It should be run from a DOS prompt, eg using a boot floppy. See post 5 at and look at the second and third links in it. The diskutil file can also be found at
