    So D* launched the first wave of new HD channels. I was happy to see them and when I am using the TV with the HR-20, I do bias torward them when surfing live TV. They are nice and I would be annoyed if D* had not gotten around to offerring them finally...

    That said, it has not changed our recording or primary viewing behavior at all. We already got all the locals in HD from D* before and until Battlestar Galactica premieres its last season in 2008, there is not a single season pass of 51 shows (only 50 on the HR-20 because it can't handle more) that uses the new channels...

    So, despite it all, the 10-250 still holds the place of honor in our family room, connected to the main plasma, and we have no desire to swap it out as the primary box. I thought I would a little. But even now as I sit watching shows in the background when I could just as easily be in front of either box, it isn't even enough of a motivation to get off my ass and move rooms to watch from the HR-20...

    I'm sure some others are having different experiences. That's fine, to each his/her own. My point is only, put the new channelsin perspective now that the anticipation is over. How big a deal is it, really? For us, not enough to want to give up or 10-250 until the HD gives out or D* stops supporting the MPEG-2 HD first gen HD feeds...

    Huh? The anticipation is no where near over... I guess you're not a sports nut. All the Regional Sports channels will be HD... so that means every football, baseball, hockey game... :up:

    Bring 'em on!

    Correct. Not interested in the sports channels at all. As I said, some people will have a different POV...

    I think I agree with all of your sentiments, but you might have buried the lead.

    What is glaringly obvious about all of the new HD channels is that none of them are really presenting core, popular programs in HD that weren't already available to us in HD. The ones that they are bringing us are either niche programs or programs that don't benefit all that much from HD the way that movies, sports, and quality dramas and comedies do. That's not a knock on DTV--kudos to them for bringing us content in HD that we should have had 2 years ago. It's a knock on the industry for dragging its heels and not providing more and more-compelling HD content. We need the niche programming too, don't get me wrong, but we need the core channels with the core programming first, not last.

    I get our regional sports channel in HD on cable. They've got about four hours of HD content a week. I'm sure that will improve but it will be a while before a substantial portion of the regional sports network content is HD.

    I finally ran one Sat in to my HR20 and sat it on top of my HR10. I don have any season Passess ( series ) on it, but CNN HD was quite nice to watch alithough after a bit I went back to SD fox news.

    Reality in HD was worse than fiction in SD?

    Certainly everyone is different. FYI that only a couple of the new 21 have anything to do with sports.

    Personally we were able to switch over half a dozen season passes to HD versions and we are now about 90% all HD in terms of recordings. Once SciFi and Spike go HD we'll be at 98% in terms of HD recordings. Perhaps the new additions are not up to snuff in your household but they are very welcome in mine and are often watched already.

    I guess that depends on what you like to watch. You are asking a very similar question to one that was asked in another thread...

    For us, we were just stunned yesterday by the Picture Quality of the Big Ten Network HD (220).

    Watching the Ilini win was great but seeing it in amazing HD was the bomb. It wasn't just the picture detail, it was the color depth that equaled the best OTA or Discovery HD Theater have to offer.

    But Smithsonian HD will be what I will use in the future to show off the HD. It is just the best. Wow. Every show is HD and just amazing.

    The History Channel and Discovery Channel HD is also stunning. Winged Migration was as good as the program I had recorded some time ago on Discovery HD Theater. And Cari Byron is everything you had hoped on Mythbusters. We also saw a night and day difference in Modern Marvels, Dogfights, Ice Road Truckers, Dirty Jobs, Man vs. Wild, Survivorman, etc.

    One of the biggest surprises was CNN HD. The graphics are exceptional.

    And the biggest surprise has to be the Weather Channel. The SD maps and graphics "On The 8's" has appeared at times to be a throw-back to the old CGA 320x240. YouTube is better resolution than some of the SD maps.

    But the graphics and maps in the Weather Channel HD show what is possible. If only Cliff Claven could see his weather babes in HD...

    We are also looking forward to watching the Cubs in HD on TBS HD next week.

    Real HD and the Cubbies make the playoff all in one week!

    I've spent time with most of those stations in HD now too but I'm just not as impressed. They're fine, but I guess my standards are just too high. Don't get me wrong, given a choice, in most cases I would rather be watching the HD version of a show. The issue is there are relatively few for me that really pop so much that I go Wow! The PBS HD I used to get on Comcast comes the closest by far, but then I know others don't have the same Comcast experience if they live in different markets. For my market though, I know I'm not alone. When my neighbors come over, who all have Comcast, they have commented on the so-so HD. Some of them were curious about the new channels, but none of them thought the PQ was better than what they already have.

    Other than sports, what shows did you have on non-network channels that you now get in HD to have been able to convert so much of your programming with the recent launch?

    Battlestar Galatica? Do you still watch Mork and Mindy too? Honestly you don't sound like a good candidate for the HR20. Not sure why you even bother with color TV.

    * Gene Simmons
    * Dirty Jobs
    * Mythbusters
    * Build it Bigger
    * Mearcat Manor
    * How it's Built
    * few others on Animal Planet we wouldn't have bothered with before
    * Smithsonian is actually peaking our interest and may get a couple new series links on this channel
    * Half a dozen movies on Starz HD already that we wouldn't have bothered to record in HD
    * Several programs on Science channel and History channel that again we wouldn't have bothered with in SD and might spark a couple new series links.
    * Guarantee of all Versus NHL HD games (ok, that's a sports one)

    Soon to come on SciFi will be
    * Stargate Atlantis
    * BSG
    * Eureka season 3 next year

    And my wife will be *very* happy with CSI reruns in HD on Spike HD as well as hopes that the new show Murder is in HD.

    I could go on but with just the new 21 a ton of stuff we record is now in HD. Probably only half of our total recording is done on the "networks". There is so much better programming out there then the drek the networks try to shove down our throats (my opinion only obviously).
