They're not paid to promote the movie, but they are paid to make the movie, and if they slag the last movie they made, then the guy making the next movie is likely to look for somebody else who can be counted on not to kill it before it even comes out.

There aren't promotional clauses in actor's contracts? I'd be surprised if there aren't. I always assumed there were and that's why actors go on the talk show circuit to promote movies.

Yeah, but that's part of the deal...they don't get paid extra for it. And some actors refuse to do it, so the producers have to decide whether having that actor in the film is worth not getting promotion out of him (which is a pretty big hit). But most aren't in the position of being able to make that kind of demand.

By extra, I mean that they aren't getting paid for acting, but getting paid for promotion. Part of their job is to promote the movie. So, they go out and they promote, talk about how great the movie is, even though it's bad, because they are paid to do it. I'd bet there are actors who are big enough to have promotion negotiated out of their contracts.

But nobody ever got an extra dollar because they promoted a movie, and nobody ever had a dollar taken away because they didn't. It's just considered to be part of the job. They're not paid to promote the movie; they're paid to make the movie. Promoting it is just part of the package.

They're paid for acting. They're not paid for promotion any more than they're paid for sitting through hair and makeup.

This week's episode was great. I don't know if it's me but this season just seems a lot more menacing, more quickly, than I remember previous seasons... er... chapters? I feel like pretty much anyone (except maybe Chris Rock) could get killed at pretty much any time. When Marshall Wickware got out of the the car I almost expected him to get killed... it feels like that kind of season to me.

And we've only seen through episode 4! Feels like more.

I honestly have no idea what's going to happen next. I love it.

Oh, except one thing: I knew as soon as Ethelrida opened that door that she would do something stupid (against her character) to get caught. Sigh.

Here's a question I have for the writers: how do they come up with these names? I wonder if they have a contest to see who can get the best name. "Swanee Capps"? Really?

My ONLY quibble with this season is the storyline is just too much of a typical mob story. But, with that said, a well done mob story is just that, well done and interesting. But it feels less "Coen Brothers" than the other seasons. There's still some Coen elements, but it's a bit less so.

One thing that's been missing this season is the Coen Brothers' traditional fine appreciate of the wide variety of ways in which people can be stupid. This season seems to be more about people taking action without understanding the whole picture, thus making things worse.

She's the exception. The rest are essentially text book gangsters, and their victims (like the funeral director and his family). The other two who might be more Coen Bros. is the Funeral Home owner's wife's sister and her friend. But they seem too "together" and "smart" for typical Coen Bros. characters (see Rob's comments).

I think the Jason Schwartzman character is 100% Cohen brothers.

Why oh why didn’t the Funeral guy launder (no pun) that money before paying off the the debt?

Well, unfortunately he was not told where the money came from... so why should he think to do so? Anyway it was already "laundered" and that apparently wasn't enough :p

It doesn't seem like he has a booming business and that looked like a LOT of money, so it might have taken a while to launder, and the vig piles up... anyway he's not gangster and just seemed like he wanted to get out from under as fast as possible.

Well I am going to show my ignorance here. I had never heard of the Mormon Extermination Order until the Marshall and KC Police Chief discussed it in Episode 3. And even then, I didn't realize it was a real "thing" - maybe just some Coen silliness. Then it came up in the Barrett hearings this morning!

I'm enjoying this season so far much more than season 3. I think that was the worst one but this season, at least to this point, is back up there.

The nurse is a great character - a little bit of Annie Wilkes in there as well.

It's a fun web that's been weaved so far. The nurse is tied to the Italians and the funeral home family; the funeral home family is tied to the Cannons (Chris Rock's name? I forget names except Doctor Senator!) via the loan while the escapees have affected all the families although the 2 mob families don't know them yet.

What exactly was the telltale smell that was on the money? Human blood? Gun powder? Slaughter house?

Swanee ate the pie with the ipecac and vomited all over the money-so it was her vomit smell that Chris Rock's character smelled. He put 2 and 2 together (no pun intended).

Just to add, what he put together refers to his guys telling him about the robbery being perpetrated by 2 women with one of them vomiting all over the place.

I kinda agreed with this when you posted that the timeline probably doesn't work for Mike to be a Rabbi offspring. Now it does look like Satchel Cannon is likely the one who becomes Mike Milligan.
