Just because it SAYS it's "negotiating" doesn't mean that it is...

I too was faced with this a few years ago until I decided to let it go until it REALLY failed - and guess what, it didn't - it eventually finished the call and I was good to go.

I'm thinking that it's transferring the logs of your activity when it says it's negotiating, as the time spent "negotiating" is longer the longer I haven't made a call.

So, try it again, and let it "negotiate" for as long as it needs to. I've had it take up to 20 minutes to "negotiate."

well for mine while it said negotiating I in fact had a dialtone on my line. I can easily tell if my tivo is still on the line since my phone lights up when an extension is in use which every single time it was displaying negotiating the light was off.

I had to update my sisters unit weekend before last. Her unit has only been connected to a phone line twice before in its life. (About a four year old unit).

It failed negotiating, so I tried something different.

I had a FA120 USB Ethernet adapter laying around so I attached that, set the area code to 877 and forced a 'call'. It went ahead connected and downloaded the connection list. After this it told me that the 1-877 'Internet' number was the one to use. 'Called' using this number and it did its service thing and on reboot updated the software.

Mind you this is NOT a hacked unit in any way.

This same technique is also useful for those having problems connecting over a VOIP connection. Just skip that and use a direct internet connection.

I know this may sound obvious but any chance that you have too many messages from Directv telling you to make a call soon? I know on Windows Servers if you have the log file size set too small or not overwrite old logs, certain programs stop functioning (in my case Exchange Email Server stopped all email delivery). Just a thought...

Thanks, this proves that what the unit SAYS it's doing is actually what it IS doing...

My sisters unit probably has hundreds of those messages. Don't know how many since trying to open the message folder causes the unit to go away for a while. :D

That still did not stop it from updating over the internet.

Just letting it go for as long as it wants worked for me as well. I let my GXCEBOT call in on Saturday evening after being disconnected for 720 days. I had previously done my Series 2 unit, which had been unplugged for almost as long, and it took about 4 mins to download the update. The GXCEBOT was negotiating for at least 20 mins, and I fell asleep waiting for it to finish. When I woke up later, I checked the status, and it was at Pending Restart. I forced the restart, and it came up with the DST update applied.

did a delete and reset took about 3-4 hours now im really screwed cannot record anything cannot make the call to tivo to get the local numbers. does the failed while negotiating or phone line is busy which i know its not. Listened in on it a few times while making the call and you can hear the modem but it just cuts off like a dropped call.DTV said that the unit has 2 modems 1 which calls DTV and 1 which calls Tivo. It will make the call to DTV but not to TIVO. I guess i need to see if the modem can be replaced the DTV guy said that it was intergrated to the board. They are sending me out a replacement there new brand which i am not to thrilled about costs $20 never said anything about sending the old unit back though. Anyone know if the modem can be replaced?
