I recently bought a Hitachi 2TB Duo Pro Quad Raid External FireWire/USB/eSATA Hard Drive off of Woot for $89.

Can I hook this up to the premiere externally? Do I have to format the drive first?

Simple answer. No. The TiVo will only easily work with pre-approved external drives (The TiVo will know what kind of drive you are attaching). Only the original Series3 would work with nearly any external drive. Your best bet is to simply replace the internal drive with a larger drive, giving you one less point of failure.

I know if you replace the internal drive and add an external drive, you can do it (Weaknees does this), but I do not know how they do it. And you will void any warranty you might still have.

Probably better to hook it to a computer and use TiVo Desktop to move shows to and from it. (Not to mention that when the TiVo crashes you'll have shows backed up on a drive it can't take down with it.)

And the older WD "My DVR Expander" although nobody would recommend those due to a very high encloser failure rate.
