    Ok, new here. We are interested in upgrading our Tivo/DVR to the 100 hour one thru DirecTV. However, the more I read up on the R15 non-TIVO model they will be sending me, the more I dont want it. Not sure I have seen a piece of equipment so resoundingly rated poorly.

    If I buy a non DirecTV model:

    1) which models are best, and

    2) is this an easy DIY swap out (ie unplug current one and plug in new one) - or are there a bunch of setup nuances?

    Thanks! Any caveats and insights are appreciated!

    Welcome to TivoCommunity!

    There are only two current DirecTV DVR models, and both are non-Tivo based ....

    * R15 Standard Definition DVR
    * HR20 HiDef DVR

    Check out the DirecTV Forums at http://www.dbstalk.com and I think you'll see that both of these DVRs are pretty reliable after numerous software updated during the past year.

    And, yes, it's an easy swap.

    Of course, if you just want more recording capacity in your current DirecTV/Tivo DVR, you can easily upgrade its hard drive yourself. You can buy pre-imaged upgrade drives, or re-image a new drive yourself in your PC. Check out these resources ....

    The Standard Unit is the R15.
    The HD unit is the HR20. The HR20-100 is the newest and looks good in black.

    Directv are also working on the HR21.

    I've had my R15s for around a year and they are still marginally better than a standard receiver - I would not use them for anything I wanted to record, but pause, ff, and rewind are a plus over the standard reciever (though implimented poorly compared to TiVo)

    The HR20 seems to get better reviews, but I've never tried one.

    The HR20/21 are the only options for those wanting HD and have Sat, so Directv have been working on them alot more than the Standard R15 DVR, but with the New upgrades, the R15 is becoming a better unit.

    Remember, when the R15 first came out, it did have problems, that have been talked about many times, but as it has improved, it is becoming a better unit.

    The only real way to know how you like or dislike the unit is to try it yourself.
