FYI - The new HDTIVO units from DTV does indeed DOWN convert all HD signals to SD if you are planning to use it on a standard definition TV.

I have tested the unit on both TV's and I can confirm this is working.
The down converted HD channels will show up (for example)

HBOHD - HBO (same channel number)

You also have the option to choose SD or HD channel versions if you are hooked up to an HDTV.
Example 501 HBOHD or 501 HBO. They both come up and both tune in.
I had to manually disable SD via programming option guides in settings.

So who said you did? The same has been true of all of the HD-capable DirecTV DVRs, TiVo and non-TiVo.

This is nothing new. All HD DVRs/Receivers can output SD video, regardless of whether the channel is HiDef or not.
