Finally got around to watching Friday's episode on my TiVo. Have to say I am not a fan of the quality of the Sci-Fi broadcasts through my cable company though I am really glad Sci-Fi is broadcasting this show not to long after it airs in the UK.

Anyway, WOW. This episode was really good. Perhaps one of the better episodes in a while. The special effects were really good but the story was good too. I'm not completely sold but I liked Donna in this episode more than before. I think she just needs a little more time.

There were a bunch of very funny running jokes in this episode. The Latin sounding Celtic to the natives was great. The pun the Doctor told, then looked at Donna who shook her head was perfect. The water pistol was pretty good too.

As long as they were really and truely sooth-saying, I had a few questions. Oh well.

Who knew that you could make circuits out of marble?

If my high school Latin classes were to be believed, "V" was pronounced like a "W," and "C" was always a hard "C." Therefore, Donna was pronouncing everything wrong. No wonder the Pompeiians didn't understand her. :D

I love episodes like this, where the Doctor ends up actually causing a historical event to happen the way it was "supposed" to happen.

BTW, here's the previous thread about this episode which was closed due to it being started before the US showing.

I've linked it here, so that you can read what others said.

Be warned, that it's against the rules to post a thread before the US airing.

Mike, I hope this is okay. :)

Great show -- its a shame that SciFi-HD show it letterboxed in both dimensions. Is it not in HD in the UK?

Doctor Who is filmed in SD and not HD. Russel T. Davis has commented that he would never film Doctor who in HD. It would be too expensive and isn't really necessary. It works better in SD.

This has been driving me bonkers as well. There's just no reason to not fill the frame with the image rather than giving us this postage stamp. Sure, it's not going to look as good as an actual HD signal, but when they end up filling less than 60% of the raster with image, that's just silly.

What do you mean? People can't possibly have an opinion about a British show before it airs in America on Sci-Fi weeks later.

    Here we go again.

Yes, of course you can have an opinion and even talk about it. In the UK forum.

I'm not too impressed with that opinion, but knowing it makes my decision to use the SD SCI-FI feed the correct one. When I saw the HD feed was postage-stamped, I switched.

The image is the same size on the SD feed or the HD feed. I would think the picture quality would be better on HD.

It is immensely better. And better than the down-rezzing I have to do to get the Mad Martha torrents onto my Tivo. I just zoom the picture and all is well.

Me, too. I know the image quality is better, too. I just figured no one would believe me.
