ok so I'm pretty bored.. sitting here at my mom's house in Michigan.

I'm watching Jerry Springer. I really love this show for entertainment.

But I've always wondered how real it is. Most of these topics/people seem totally made up, like there really aren't these people in this world.

    Or is it real?

    Poll coming.

When I was a teenager, I had a couple friends in church who watched Springer. One day they ran a clip saying to call if you had sibling rivalry issues, so the younger of the two sisters (who were very close) called and off the top of her head made up this massive rant about how evil her sister was and how much she hated her.

Both sisters and their mom were in NYC within a week to be on Springer (not the guests who sit in the chairs, but the random people who want to stand up with comments in the audience). The three of them had a fantastic weekend in New York and we all had a good laugh seeing these girls who were so sweet to each other and everyone else get into a 30 second screaming match on TV. Mom and sisters all thought the whole thing was hysterical and never imagined anything so absurd would happen to them.

In short, I believe NOTHING on Springer.

A friend from high school worked with a "talent agency" in Chicago and says that Springer's show called for people from time to time... so, yeah, at least some of it is fake, unlike professional wrestling :).

A buddy of mine was on Springer 12 years or so ago. It's staged. At least his show was. :) Another buddy of mine was in the audience a year or two ago. He says it's phoney, too. The stories and situations have a kernel of truth to them, but they're encouraged to embelish it and ham it up. The guests aren't coached onstage during the show but they are beforehand. The audience is coached. The stuff they chant is fed to them. My buddy in the audience said the boobies are most definitely real. :D

Somehow the audience never thinks to chant that themselves. :D

On a related note, my wife and I have joked that we could get some friends together and make a pretty good Springer episode. The title would be "I wore my wife's ex-boyfriend's girlfriend's panties".

We've got all the elements for a great show except no one is mad at anyone. If we could work up some anger, we'd be good to go!

That's more or less what I thought was going on.

Really, not any more real or less fake than, say "Heroes" or "Sarah Conor Chronicles" or any other scripted show. Like WWE.

    It's all can be entertaining.

There was a "behind the scenes" kinda show on Springer on VH1 a while back, and this is basically what you saw there-the basics of the stories were true, and the people were real, but they were definitely coached to go overboard.

It can be entertaining when I'm feeling like my life can't get any worse. :D

Springer has used professional wrestlers as "cast members" at least once. Not particularly surprising when, at one point, his "head of security" was an active professional wrestler at the time.

I'm not sure I believe that story, given Springer is shot in Chicago.

Adam Burish...a Chicago Blackhawk who's know for his agitating style of hockey play, recently was used as one of the "security" guys on the show. He claimed the fights were real, but, then he didn't want to get hurt while "breaking up" one of those "fights"....

It's all fake, except the part about the guests living in trailer parks. That's true. :)
