After 7 years of service it finally died. I'm guessing it was the HDD as I have been getting playback frozen with increasing frequency. It would take a power cycling off/on to get back to normal.

Last night when it wasn't responding, I powered it off..it came back on and then it seems like it powered off and no image came through. The LED was red and then it would turn off and then red, etc. Steady red now.

(Maybe I'm lucky and it was just the power supply).

    I have several options:

    1. If it's the drive, get a new one re-image it and go about my happy way

    2. If it's the power supply, get a new one, etc

    3. Get a new DVR on ebay (may be a problem activating with Directv)

    4. Get a Directv DVR, still pay $99 and a lease fee

    5. Get a Directv HDDVR pay $199 and connect it to the SD Tv..no this one doesn't make sense

5.b Get a Directv HDDVR pay $199 and buy a new HDTV

    Suggestions?

That sounds like a bad power supply to me. If it won't come on and at least say "Welcome, powering up..." then the power supply is dead.

    Its hard drive.

Either reimage or get a HDVR2 (non RID series 2), move the access card over to the replacement and refresh services. No need to call a CSR to activate through them.

You will be good to go.

Thanks I think I may have to go the HDD way.
For now I'm using my old Radio Shack Wireless Trans/Receiv pair to get TV from downstairs
