My understanding is that ballroom competition rules make lifts illegal in some types of dances but not others. So it's the genre of dance they are performing, not how late in the series it is.

    Interesting. Thanks.

I could have sworn they had that "no lift" rule so that the women celebrities didn't have an advantage. Was that originally the rule that was later changed? Who knows, I'm probably just remembering incorrectly.

If I remember correctly, lifts are only allowed in one dance, the Argentine Tango. I'm pretty sure they didn't do that dance in the early seasons.

I'm thinking there's one other-- the Lindy Hop, but they very rarely do that one.

I'll have to watch 1 ep to make sure there isn't someone I've never heard of who looks like Gil. If not, I may skip it. ;)

I think he's been on the show before as a special appearance. Didn't they do some kind of brother vs brother dance?

Val has been on the show many times as part of pro numbers. Also I think they featured a group of Chmerkovskiy studio students at some point and he was there then as well.

Yea the troup they had last year seemed to be a big statement to the pros that they had backups in case the pros had any demands.

It may also be the pros are looking for timeoff to do other stuff.

I don't think Chaz being able to do lifts or not is going to be a big deal. Not all the guys on the show have been able to do lifts with their partner for whatever reason. Other guys have been older or just not very strong, or have a heavy partner. Maks certainly didn't do any super ambitious lifts with Kirstie last season.

Not counting stuff like the Argentine Tango, lifts really only come into play for the freestyle.

Apart from that, the girl's feet are not allowed to come off the floor. (e.g. for moves like a floor sweep)

My wife made a comment that she thinks the dancers are now more well known then most of the "stars" they are partnered with.

This is what I did when Misty May Trainor was on. I am actually interested in most of the people this season so I might watch a little bit.
