I see several other cmr options like the Seagate Ironwolf. Is that an option now? Is the idea to just get a CMR hard drive or is there additional spec needed by the drive?

CMRs seem to be hard to find now, most will not tell you if they are SMR or CMR. WD Red Plus drives that end in EFRX, PURX/PURZ purple drives still work. Avoid EFAX Red. as well as any 7200RPM drives.

So - which of the Seagate HDD would be the more desirable?

When used in an external enclosure is rotational speed specification as 'critical' as the slower 5400 spec desired for internals?

Nah, in an external enclosure, assuming you have decent power supply to it and good heat dispersion, 7.2k drives are fine.
