Because of a small little icon that's superimposed up in the corner where it out of the way and provides a great amount of functionality for many people.

To each his own, I suppose...

I'm glad to see it back - it's much easier to schedule a recording this way than any other, I wish that they were on all commercials for TV shows.

I believe it's very similar to the trigger for the CBS Lydia bug,
contained in some video line you sometimes see at the top of the picture (for those not TV Tech types), along with Closed Captioning, Nielsen Ratings, V-Chip, etc, just a line TiVo cares about.

CBS promos fed to the station for air during non CBS programming have the Lydia trigger,
so why not the TiVo Thumb trigger.

CBS Lydia is the system that supers the local affiliates logo icon during CBS promos, coming back from network break, etc.

What does it change for you about the way you watch TV (except for the unfortunate problem you had)?

It makes it a whole lot easier to schedule recordings for me.

I figured it was something along those lines, just looking for confirmation. Also off topic, but is it sad that this is the first time I have heard of the Lydia system? (that could be more answered by phox in a PM if felt necessary, more or less just a side comment)

Small??? little??? icon that takes up almost 1/3 of the height and more than 1/3 the width of the screen. (Just measured it at 6" high and 13" wide on a screen measuring 20" high by 36" wide.) Oh, and to make it even less unobtrusive it blinks the text!!

    Annoying? Darned right it's annoying.
    ----------------------------------

Edit: That was a thumbs-up for an insurance company ad. The thumbs up for record one is slightly less tall and no less annoying.

the thumb icon on my screen was nowhere near that large in relation to my screen. I have seen it, and used it, on two different size screens. I am not obsessed enough about an overlay on a commercial to get specific measurements though.

Same here - going from memory, the icon couldn't have been more than dollar bill sized on my 56" DLP when last I saw it.

I guess I'm not the easily annoyed type, especially when it's a feature that makes my life easier.

I honestly had no idea people objected to this helpful feature. I have never seen any complaints about it before.

I do not understand how the thumbs-up functionality specifically annoys people. The same number of pixels advertising the same product, service, or show are displayed for the exactly same amount of time (assuming nothing is broken), whether or not a thumbs-up ad is being used. When they show up past the time they should (into another commercial or worse still, the feature), that's a different story and people should be up in arms over those kinds of issues(advertisers and networks included, I wouldn't want a Coke thumb on my Pepsi ad, for instance).

But if Ford wants to pay extra to TiVo for the ad they're already paying to air, in order to cover a part of their own commercial with a green bar offering the option to click into more advertising, how is that any worse for you as a viewer then if they hadn't?

Now that I see it spelled right, of course that's what it stands for.

I had a similar problem today...was watching The Price is Right (gotta watch as much Barker as I can until the re-runs run out), and they had the Kid Nation advertisement with the thumbs up option. Well, it stayed on the screen even when TPIR came back on, and when I hit the "rewind" button, it ran backward for a moment, but then automatically skipped backward about 5 minutes....it was weird, it would only hold the last 5 seconds of recorded program, but it held the 5 minutes of programming that came on before the commercial. However, simply changing the channel from CBS, to something else and back did the trick. Seems like CBS doesn't know how to implement the "thumbs-up" feature like FOX does :D

I've had that problem a couple of times before, a year or so ago. It was just kind of an annoyance - no programs or specific channels that I remember in particular. I would just go back 30 seconds or so and let the commercial finish airing at normal speed, and usually, the thumb indicator would disappear.

I just wish the TiVo were smart enough not to give me that big "Thumbs up to record" when it's showing an ad for something that I've already scheduled to record.

If it's smart enough to know what line to add to my ToDo list, it should be smart enough to recognize that that line is already there...

    Hahahah. Welcome, newbie.
Seriously though, every time I see one of these, my stomach aches a bit because of all the technical problems I've had, and it's clear I'm not alone - and not just with FOX's implementation apparently. Seems like this is simply a poorly coded obtrusion. Also, my ads are larger than the one pictured above and are in the upper right corner, not the bottom left. So, apparently we can't assume we're all seeing the same thing. I think they very annoying. They are reason #3 I actively tell people (and post to other sites like Digg) to never ever buy a Tivo. If they're going to do this stuff, I figure I may as well try to drive them out of business. I guess it's a hobby of sorts.

(In case you're curious: #1 - no lifetime and #2 - ads on my Now Playing screen).

    That's a joke, right?

Isn't that a bit narcissistic? Even though others may enjoy the service, you don't, so it must end?
