    Update:

2 Cablecards work fine in Slot 1 giving me everything. Slot 2 does NOT give me channels except analog on either card. The "configure cablecard" menu shows a screen that says "cablecard not in normal operation" for either card.

Tivo is swapping out my unit.

Here's what's interesting. Last night I wasn't sure if I was going to get Heroes or 24. They both come on at 9pm. Do you know that if I set the recording up, the cablecard does obey and I got both shows! I tested 1 more double-record this morning on HBOHD and SHOWHD with no trouble, even though I cannot "watch live tv" on cablecard 2.

Ditto. It gave me fits during install and occasionally the hd feeds go out on it (but not cc 1)

OK my 2nd Tivo arrived and everything is working fantastic. YAY  :D the problem was a defective Tivo all along.

Question though, I was thrown at first because the CableCard configuration menu says "in order for service to be activated for this device please call 804-xxxxxx" when I never saw that before. I saw messages such as "service activated" etc.

I set up an appointment before I realized that everything is working. Should I cancel that appointment or am I going to have problems at some point in the future?

One other thing - Tivo #1 was giving me CRAPPY vomit-dripping-on-screen analog channels as soon as the cards were 'hit.' The analog channels looked GREAT _until_ they were hit. On this new Tivo, BOTH cablecards look great. I'm sure that I don't want the cards to be hit. I'm going to cancel tomorrow's service appointment until I have any trouble. Everything's just so nice and smooth

One way to rule out a bad CC: if you have a TV with a CC slot, try it in there and see if it works. You will need a tech or the office to "hit" it, though.

I don't think it's "bad" , I am wondering if with the "waiting for CP auth" message if somehow the "old hit" in the "old device" is going to time out and I'll be missing recordings.

If you are seeing the "waiting for CP auth" message, then you will have problems viewing shows that have the copy protection flag set.

EDIT: Are you a Cablevision customer? I answered your question based on my experience with Cablevision's network.

I'm waiting for Comcast this morning to check out a similar problem. I installed Cablecard #1 in slot 1 and it seemed to take its programming information. Slot #2 took three tries from the Custrep before it finally began to work. But then I discovered that the Slot 1 card wasn't picking up any digital channels...just analog. The Slot 2 card that was earlier problematic is now fine. Very weird. We'll see what happens after the service call and whether or not its the card or the Tivo. I ordered two Series 3 boxes and the other is still in the box. I can use it if necessary.

After an install that I thought was OK, I eventually figured out the the second cablecard was not authorizing HD channels. Called tech support who said he would "hit the box." I never figured out of he hit the still installed SA 8300HD, cable card 1 or cablecard 2. I don't think he had a clue about the S3. Anyway, it didn't work so he scheduled a tech to come by my house. When the tech showed up, it was working. That was in Dec.

Tuesday it didn't record House. Cablecard 2 was acting up again. Rebooted. No Dice. Started playing with the tuners to make sure that one eas working and one was not. One was not, then I tuned away from HD channels and tuned back (I think - I was justing trying to figure something out.) Cablecard 2 started working. Sounds like there may be some obscure bug in the S3's software.

On the other hand Comcast can send updates to my cable modem, cable box, and cablecards without the local folk cable knowing, and maybe without tech support knowing, so who knows what's going on.

Since the above I've had one instance of loosing all but OTA channels on CC#2, but that was within the first few days after the above and a cold boot fixed that as usual. Since then, about 2 full weeks, I've been 100% OK. (KNOCK ON WOOD!). No channel loss.

The entire CC issue seems like waaay too much voodoo. Yesterday, the tech from Service Electric Cable TV failed. Power up/down cycles. One of the cable cards that failed in the S3 is now running my Panasonic Plasma. The TiVo Tech advised me to try a couple more cards. If they don't work, return the S3 for an exchange because "maybe the TiVo is bad."

Now I need to take off from work to fiddle with CC's.

    Why so much mystery?

Not sure if I should post this as I'm a bit superstitious, but since the software upgrade I have not had a single instance of loosing channels on CC#2. (see my previous posts on this thread for more info)

Just before the upgrade I had given up and was going to ask Tivo to replace my S3, but when I called they said that the software upgrade was going to resolve this problem. Next day I got the upgrade. Since then...

(KNOCK ON WOOD!!), no problems. :D

Anyone have any recent problems of CC #2 dropping out? Mine's been out for 3 weeks. We've swapped the card and are about to swap again. 3 tech visits and 15 or so phone calls. I'm about to give up and go OTA but don't really want to....

On my TiVo-HD CC slot #2 is problematic.
When I tune to a black screen now, I simply pull CC#2 and re-insert. 99 out of 100 times that does the trick. CC# 1 seems almost 100% reliable. CC#2 is pretty much always the troublemaker.

After surviving the Horrors of the Damned in January 2007, getting two cards going and stable <the solution turned out to be when TiVo updated from OS 7 to 8>. I then had total stability and satisfaction all the way into May 2008.

But in late May and June, I started getting the b&w screen and notice that "CableCard 2 is being initialized"--sometimes two or three times an evening. Since when the program came back, it had jogged back a couple of words and nothing was missed, I took it to be just a nuisance. But then in mid-June something more ominous began to set in: the first message would be followed by a second instance of the b&w screen, with the message "CableCard 1 is being initialized," which would be followed by the astonishing report "The card in slot 1 is not a viewing card." And sure enough, that card would be busted back to Basic Cable, plus <interestingly> all the major 700-number broadcast HD channels <I have Cablevision>. Restarting would of course restore everything.

What I have discovered is a convergence of two factors, neither of which seems to be specifically a TiVo problem. First, we have volunteer fire departments hereabouts, who tend to have full load subscriptions in the firehouse, and as CableCards have come into wider use, they have shown a tendency to migrate. So Cablevision has started a program of pinging boxes to verify cards, and the way they were doing it was poking TiVo in the eye a lot of the time <sometimes the result of spillover effects from card 2 to card 1 included killing the HDMI handshake with the monitor and killing the remote, requiring a hard reboot by disconnecting the AC>. Since a visit from a senior tech in mid-June, that has stopped happening.

What I am getting now is an artifact of a month-long program of reallocating bandwidth between analog and digital channels, expanding HD channels to include The Weather Channel, Discovery, FX, Animal Planet, and several others. What is happening now is that in addition to the "initializing CableCard 2" messages, I am finding out that what at frist seem to be random channels are missing--neither tuner can tune them. Last night that included FX <ch. 40> and Food <chs. 67 and 766>. As always, rebooting fixed it. Cablevision HD tech support explained that this is likely to happen from time to time from now until August 1, but will be temporary.

My current workaround is to check both tuners late afternoon each day, confirm that the channels needed for that evening's To Do list are available, and reboot if anything seems hinky.

On reboot, the last step is the black screen and "initializing CableCard 2," which is always successful. Initializing CableCard 1 seems to be part of the reboot itself and not a subroutine that can be provoked independently--so that if a Cablevision ping puts it into a strange state, there is no help for it but to reboot.

    That's all I know.

Are they NDS cable cards? If so have you seen this thread? The fix requires a firmware update of the NDS cards.
