Yeah, Weigel only owns a few stations - and historically, WCIU has always been independent until recently. All I watched CW for was Steve Wilkos, which I get through YouTube generally now.

The WGN thing surprises me, given that it's a Nexstar station now (by way of Tribune Broadcasting) - but they carry WGN America. I miss my morning news, it's the best in Chicago - not as serious as the other options, without the national fluff stories (seriously, CBS, I could give a monkey's about Oprah's interview with the exiled Royals...)

IDK, maybe AT&T TV has just had a policy so far of not carrying any independent locals. They've obviously had their plate full so far just getting the network affiliates on board, and they're not done yet. (Not to mention PBS stations, which they absolutely need to add!) Who knows if they'll ever add your local WGN 9.

Can you get it with an OTA antenna? It's not elegant as you'd have to switch inputs or apps but at least OTA TV is free. (It would be really nice if AT&T TV tweaked the software on their boxes and apps so that their channel guide would incorporate OTA channels from HDHomeRun network-connected tuners, the way the Channels app and other apps do. Wouldn't be hard, it's all open-standards DLNA stuff. AT&T would just have to supply the guide data for the OTA channels and sub-channels, but then they're licensing guide data from TiVo/Rovi anyhow, I think, and the Rovi database includes all those little OTA stations. Oh well, probably just a pipe dream...)

I'm considering dragging my old THD out of retirement (again) to do OTA duty, for picking up the subchannels and 9/26.

The policy re: independents makes sense to me as to why they might be doing it. I'd expect WGN to get picked up eventually, it carries Cubs games and Cubs fans are rabid when it comes to getting their ballgames. (Hell, the Cubs became America's default team (in the absence of a local one) through WGN Superstation coverage, back in the day).

Personally, I'd put PBS ahead of WGN and CW in terms of importance, but the PBS app does a decent enough job for me with what I watch.

Forgot about the Cubs on WGN. But are those games not also carried on the Cubs RSN, Marquee Sports Network, which AT&T TV does carry (in the Choice package and above)?

Huh, on second look you’re right. 2020 season and forward are Marquee only, no more Cubs on WGN. Had to look it up, I’m a Sox guy.

At least we get NBC Sports Chicago, so no problem come summertime. We’ve got Marquee too, but I’m not sullying my nice TV with a Cubs game!
