Purchased an Elite from a Amazon marketplace retailer and it arrived today. Plugged it in and absolutely no lights or sound. Swapped power cord with one of my other Premiers - still dead. Pressed, held, even caressed the Format button. No go.

Although the unit looked brand new and box was sealed, it did NOT have a sticker over the CableCard slot like my XLs did. I'm a little suspicious I may have gotten a used unit.

Amazon had no Elites available through Amazon fulfillment. What does that mean? It means that when I return the DOA unit to Yogi Computers, I'm going to have to pay shipping. What a racket.

So pissed, I can't type straight.

Bought an Elite @Best Buy this week. I was initially suspicious of the plain brown box, but all inside was in good order. To the OP, there was no sticker on the cablecard slot either.

All Elites come in a plain brown box, as they are not really a retail device. You got yours at a Magnolia store, which is supposed to be a high end store where you would have assistance purchasing the product.

You can call tivo and they will swap it, or call the vendor and ask them to swap. Many are willing to avoid poor feedback on amazon marketplace.

if that does not work, get amazon customer service involved. There should be no cost to you to get what you paid for. You did not order a DOA unit.

When using amazon, I try to use amazon fullfilment as much as possible (the best return policy out there). But i have used the marketplace and the vendors seem to do well also, they don't want a bad rating on amazon. You shouldn't have to pay for a DOA unit, even shipping.

Yogi is a pretty reputable Amazon Marketplace retailer. I highly doubt the unit was used.

I didn't have a sticker over my CC slot on my Elite either. They probably eliminated it since you have to use a CC with the elite while the other Premieres can be used without it. Or they just removed it to save some time and money.

It certainly sucks to get an item that is DOA. You might be able to go through Amazon to get them to make the mechant cover the DOA box.. I know when I've had returns to Amazon merhchants for new items that had issues, I didn't have to pay for return shipping.

I don't understand this comment. Are you insinuating that the seller was trying to screw you in some way?

Bad units are bad for their costs and their reputation. Impossible to say when it broke.

Chill out. It sucks to get something broken, but it happens.

You have gotten good advice on how to avoid shipping. I would think that whatever shipping insurance you have should cover things as well.
